KALININGRAD, July 10 The rector of the Baltic Federal University (BFU) Alexander Fedorov, by decision of the Leningrad District Court of Kaliningrad, was chosen as a preventive measure in the form of arrest, he was placed in a pre-trial detention center until September 8, reports regional IC.
«»The Leningrad District Court granted the petition of the investigator of the first department for the investigation of particularly important cases… of the Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Kaliningrad Region to elect the rector of the Kant Baltic Federal University, Alexander Fedorov, suspected of embezzlement and embezzlement of funds committed by a group of persons in prior conspiracy with using his official position, a preventive measure in the form of detention was placed in a pre-trial detention center until September 8, 2024,” the statement says.
According to the press service of the regional court, the suspect objected to the investigation's request. His defender Anastasia Reznikova supported this position and pointed out the possibility of choosing a more lenient preventive measure in the form of house arrest. However, in court, the investigator indicated that Fedorov was suspected of committing a serious crime, punishable by imprisonment for up to ten years. According to the investigation, the presence of a suspect who does not have a permanent place of residence in the region (temporarily registered at one address, in fact never lived there) at large during the investigation of a criminal case will give him the opportunity to destroy evidence, influence witnesses, and hide from the investigative authorities and courts.
Earlier, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that Fedorov and his deputy Elena Myalkina are suspected of embezzling money on an especially large scale. According to investigators, from February 2022 to June 2024, they embezzled over 18 million rubles. A criminal case was opened against Fedorov for embezzlement on an especially large scale (Part 4 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), and against Myalkina — for complicity in embezzlement on an especially large scale.
According to the investigation, Fedorov issued orders to pay additional payments to employees for the intensity of work, and the vice-rector then collected this money and transferred it to the manager, the prosecutor’s office said.
The press service of the university reported that all departments and services of the IKBFU are operating as normal, and this will not affect the course of the admissions campaign.
