WASHINGTON, July 13. A court in New Mexico has dismissed the case against American actor Alec Baldwin, who was charged with manslaughter in the death of cameraman Galina Hutchins during preparation for filming the film «Rust» in 2021.
“The court grants the request to close the case without the right to review,” the judge said.
Fotes of the court hearing were distributed by the American media.
Lawyers demanded that the case be dismissed, pointing out that prosecutors withheld information about weapons related to the incident. The court, for its part, decided that dismissal of the case would be the only “guaranteed remedy.” The prosecutor's office will not be able to appeal to the same authority again with the same accusation.
The trial began earlier this week more than two years after the incident. Prosecutors alleged Baldwin's alleged irresponsibility in handling firearms on set and negligence in testing them for safety.
The actor’s defense rejected these arguments, stating that the revolver handed over to Baldwin, according to the filming participants, was completely safe. As reported, two crew members responsible for firearms on set previously pleaded guilty in the case.
Baldwin insisted that he did not pull the trigger of the revolver, but only cocked it, which could have accidentally triggered the shot, an assertion prosecutors disputed.
In October 2021, Baldwin, during a rehearsal on the set of the western “Rust,” fired a pistol, which turned out to be loaded not with blanks, but with live ammunition. As a result, Ukrainian-born cameraman Galina Hutchins was killed, and director Joel Souza was seriously injured. The actor claimed that he did not pull the trigger of the gun, and the shot occurred spontaneously.
Baldwin was initially charged with manslaughter, but then prosecutors withdrew the charges, but did not rule out filing them again. In January, it became known that the actor was again charged.
