Maurizio Reggiani, who served as Lamborghini's technical director from 2006 to 2023, will advise Italian startup Eccentrica Cars in the preparation process to produce a restomod based on the Lamborghini Diablo supercar.
Eccentrica Cars is the brainchild of Italian automobile enthusiast and entrepreneur Emanuel Colombini and his successful designer furniture company Colombini Group. The premiere of the Diablo Eccentrica restomod prototype took place in July last year, but due to the complexity of the project, its small-scale production has not yet begun — the first copies will be shipped to customers in June 2025. In total, the company is going to release 19 such restomods, each will cost the customer 1.35 million euros.

Bloomberg reported this week that Eccentrica has hired Lamborghini chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani, who retired last year, as a consultant. He came to Lamborghini in 1995 from Bugatti, the Diablo supercar was then in the middle of its life cycle (produced from 1990 to 2001) and Reggiani was entrusted with the development of its successor, the Murcielago. The Lamborghini Reventon, Aventador and Huracan supercars were also developed under Reggiani's leadership, so his experience will certainly be useful to the young company Eccentrica.

To make each Eccentrica restomod, you need a donor Lamborghini Diablo from the early years of production (before 1994 inclusive) in good condition, which will be radically redesigned, but will retain the spirit of the dashing 1990s. The restomod design project was developed by Italian designer Carlo Borromeo, owner of his own BorromeodeSilva studio in Milan (he, by the way, was responsible for the style of the Lancia Delta Futurista and Nardone Porsche 928 restomods).

All of the restomod's exterior body panels are new, made from carbon fiber, and the original load-bearing steel body structure has been reinforced. The car no longer has lifting headlights, but the shields from them have been preserved — they lower automatically when the headlights are turned on. The LED tail lights are completely new. There are more ventilation holes on the body, but the aerodynamic tail is extremely laconic and does not spoil the original silhouette.

The restomod's interior is designed in the angular aesthetics of the 1980s: several matrix displays with large yellow pixels are built into the front panel. There are two rows of large buttons on the center console. The powerful Marantz audio system must be connected via Bluetooth. The microclimate system has been modernized. Carbon fiber and parts made by 3D printing are widely used in finishing.

The track of the original supercar has been expanded. The suspension is completely new, on double wishbones “all around” with adaptive shock absorbers. The steering mechanism is equipped with a modern hydraulic booster (early Diablos did not have a booster at all). The 17-inch wheels were replaced by 19-inch ones, which included larger and more powerful Brembo disc brakes.

The original 5.7-liter naturally aspirated petrol V12 has undergone a comprehensive revision: thanks to new components and a new control program, its output has been increased from 492 hp. and 580 Nm up to 550 hp. and 600 Nm. The 5-speed manual transmission has given way to a 6-speed, with all power sent to the rear wheels through a new limited-slip differential. The acceleration time to 100 km/h has been reduced from 4.1 to 3.5 s, the top speed has increased from 325 to 335 km/h.
The Diablo Eccentrica driving presentation will take place next month as part of car week in Monterey (USA, California), which traditionally attracts wealthy collectors of rare and expensive cars from all over the world.
