Microsoft users are confused

A massive outage at Microsoft has caused chaos around the world, with flights cancelled and hospitals, GP surgeries, rail services, banks, stock exchanges and TV channels shut down, the Daily Mail reports.

A technical fault caused Windows computers to suddenly shut down, leading to airport departure boards suddenly going dark on one of the busiest days for global aviation since Covid.

The UK's largest rail company warned passengers of possible delays due to «widespread IT problems», airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air warned of «disruptions», and British National Health Service staff said that when they logged on they found that most non-clinical systems are not working.

Microsoft confirmed it was investigating an «issue» with its 365 apps and operating systems and said users should expect a «degraded experience.» US cybersecurity company CrowdStrike admitted responsibility for the bug and said they were «working on it.»

Windows is the most used operating system in the world, which means that the outage has affected almost every area of the global economy — restaurants and cafes, including the Gail's bakery chain, cannot accept card payments, writes the Daily Mail.

Banks, supermarkets and other major institutions around the world said computer problems were disrupting services, and there were huge queues at airports including Gatwick and Luton.

GPs have also been affected, the Daily Mail notes, with hospitals in Cumbria, Cheshire, Yorkshire and the West Midlands posting on social media that their systems had been affected.

The LSE group, which runs the London Stock Exchange exchange, said it had encountered a global technical problem preventing the publication of news.

Even football clubs were affected: Blackburn Rovers informed fans that their ticketing platform was out of order.

Microsoft 365 said it is investigating an issue affecting user access to apps and services.

«Our services continue to see continuous improvement while we continue to take corrective action,» they said Monday morning. We still expect that users will continue to experience incremental relief as we continue to resolve the issue.”

This comes amid reports of widespread IT outages affecting airlines, broadcasters and banks.

Among the affected companies is Ryanair, which posted on its website: «Possible network disruption (Friday 19 July) due to a global outage of third party systems. Affected passengers will be notified and all passengers traveling on the network in Friday 19 July should check your Ryanair app for the latest updates on your flight. We advise passengers to arrive at the airport three hours before departure to avoid any disruption. We regret any inconvenience caused to passengers due to this. An IT issue with a third party that is beyond Ryanair's control and affects all airlines operating on the network.»

Edinburgh Airport said the IT failure was causing longer waiting times.

Stansted Airport said some check-in services were being carried out manually due to an IT system failure, but «flights were still operating as normal.»

In the US, emergency lines are reportedly down in Alaska, Arizona, Indiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Ohio.

Microsoft users around the world have taken to social media to express their frustration and confusion due to their computers also shutting down.

The event also caused travel chaos as passengers trying to board flights were unable to check in due to technical problems.

American Airlines was forced to ground its flights this morning due to communications problems, according to the FAA's status page.

Low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines, a unit of Frontier Group Holdings, Allegiant and SunCountry reported outages in work that influenced their activities.

Frontier previously reported that a «major Microsoft technical outage» had temporarily impacted its operations, while SunCountry said a third-party vendor had impacted its reservations and check-in services, without naming the company.

«Web» The Allegiant site is currently unavailable due to an issue with Microsoft Azure,» Nevada-based Allegiant said in a statement to CNN.

A message on the CrowdStrike support page reads: «CrowdStrike is aware of outages on Windows hosts related to the Falcon sensor. Symptoms include hosts experiencing a blue screen error checking error related to the Falcon sensor. Our engineers are actively working to resolve this issue and there is no need to contact support. Status updates will be posted below as we have more information to share, including once the issue is resolved.'

Only two months. ago Microsoft faced another major outage after Bing.com, Microsoft's search engine, went down and the problem appeared to spread to the brand's application programming interface, meaning services like DuckDuckGo also went down building.

The outage has also reportedly impacted ChatGPT and Ecosia. Despite Google's dominance in the world of web search, the Bing API has many high-profile clients.

Various reports on On Platform X, users reported being greeted with either a blank page or HTTP error code 429 when attempting to log in.

Users reported that both Bing.com and DuckDuckGo loaded, but neither returned search results when you entered a query.
