MOSCOW, July 24 The holder of the interim World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight and light heavyweight titles, American David Benavidez will be the opponent of the winner of the fight for the title of absolute world boxing champion between Russians Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, journalist Michael Benson reported, citing the words of the head of the WBC Mauricio Sulaiman.
According to Sulaiman, Benavidez has decided to remain in the light heavyweight division. He will vacate the interim belt in the super middleweight division and become the mandatory challenger for the light heavyweight title. He will face the winner of the Beterbiev-Bivol fight.
On June 1, Bivol was supposed to fight against the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Organization (WBO) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion Artur Beterbiev in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), but his opponent suffered a torn meniscus. The fight was rescheduled for October 12.
33-year-old Bivol has 23 wins (12 by knockout) and no losses in the professional ring. 39-year-old Beterbiev has 20 wins in 20 professional fights (all by knockout). 27-year-old Benavidez's record is 29 wins in 29 fights (24 by knockout).
