MOSCOW, July 28. Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Technology of Bioorganic Synthesis Products at ROSBIOTECH University Dmitry Kulikov told how much chocolate can be consumed daily without harm to health.

"Starting from three years, you can give natural chocolate, not exceeding 20-30 grams per day. At an older age, up to 50-60 grams are allowed, preferably dark chocolate with a minimum amount of additional additives: cookies, marmalade, fudge, puffed rice,» Kulikov said.
According to the specialist, chocolate acts as a soft and safe tonic due to the theobromine alkaloid it contains. The most important thing is that it tones but does not cause addiction. In addition, this alkaloid protects tooth enamel and participates in its remineralization.
Also, bitter dark chocolate is a source of proanthocyanidins — powerful antioxidants and essential oils that increase the concentration of «good» cholesterol in the blood and reduce the content of «bad», which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis.
Tryptophan, an essential amino acid that stimulates the production of serotonin, a natural antidepressant (the hormone of happiness), plays an important role. Dark chocolate removes cortisol and catecholamines from the body, hormones involved in stress reactions. Accordingly, natural chocolate makes a person less susceptible to stress. Dark chocolate also contains a small amount of caffeine, which allows you to gently stimulate human activity.
Kulikov added that the main disadvantage of chocolate is its high calorie content (about 500 kilocalories per 100 grams), as well as a large amount of added sugar and fat. It should not be eaten by those who are going to lose weight or have diabetes.
