MOSCOW, July 28, Andrey Simonenko. International Olympic Committee (IOC) Communications Director Mark Adams said that the triathletes' introduction to the water course was postponed due to water pollution in the Seine, but the organization is confident that the water quality will improve in the coming days.
«Today we agreed with the International Triathlon Union that the triathletes' introduction to the course is being postponed due to the poor water quality associated with the rain on July 26 and 27. But we are confident, based on the weather forecast for the next 48 hours, that the water quality in the Seine will improve,» Adams said.
The Paris Olympic triathlon competitions are scheduled for July 30 and 31.
According to media reports, the Seine was contaminated with E. coli bacteria at levels higher than recommended on the day of Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo's demonstration swim in the river that runs through the capital. Hidalgo swam in the Seine ahead of the Olympics to prove that the river was safe for competitions. The mayor was joined in the swim by Tony Estanguet, chairman of the Paris Organizing Committee, and Marc Guillaume, prefect of the capital region. The Seine is set to host stages of the Olympic triathlon and open water swimming tournaments.
