PARIS, July 29 French authorities have prevented further sabotage on railway tracks after arson attacks disrupted train service for several days last week, the Journal du Dimanche reported.
According to the newspaper, in Marolles-sur-Seine, in the Seine-et-Marne department, a fence protecting the high-speed train line (LGV) was cut down on Sunday by an unknown person. «The fence was cut more than three meters,» a police source told JDD. Three recently installed CCTV cameras were also damaged. A video from one of them shows a man with wire cutters and wearing a mask cutting part of the fence.
That evening, in the town of Châtelet-en-Brie, in the same department, SNCF agents also noticed a cut fence. In Presle-en-Brie, a man tried unsuccessfully to enter the SNCF technical room. According to the company, these actions did not have any impact on rail traffic.
In the Val d'Oise department, a national police team was urgently called in connection with sabotage committed in the SNCF technical room. Upon arrival, the police noticed that «two electronic strips used to regulate railway traffic lights» were torn from the station, but the emergency alarm system was activated, and incidents were avoided.
In the Marne department, police discovered that a protective bow had been torn from the power supply point of the railway tracks.
Earlier, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin reported that the French authorities detained a far-left activist on suspicion of involvement in arson on the railway tracks.
On the night of July 26, the opening day of the Olympics, the French National Railway Company (SNCF) reported that several arson attacks had been committed on the railway tracks in various directions. This caused major disruptions on three TGV high-speed train lines, and sabotage was prevented on another line. Many trains were delayed and cancelled, affecting around 800,000 passengers. Train service was fully restored on Monday.
