The new Maserati supercar is not made from scratch, but is a further development of the MC20 model, which debuted four years ago.
Earlier this week, we reported that Maserati, due to declining sales and losses (minus 83 million euros in the first half of the year), was at risk of falling out of the Stellantis brand portfolio and being taken over by new owners. This information was reported not by insiders, but by the bosses of Stellantis themselves. However, later they realized that they had overreacted and had seriously damaged Maserati's image, and in connection with this they issued a new statement (quoted by Reuters), which said that Stellantis was not going to sell either Maserati or any of the other thirteen brands (Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroen, Dodge, DS, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Opel, Peugeot, Ram and Vauxhall). We would add that it is not planning to do so yet; changing its mind is not a difficult task.
Let us recall that earlier this year Maserati announced a delay in the market launch of two very important new products: a large crossover that will replace the Levante will appear only in 2027, and the next-generation Quattroporte sedan in 2028. Apparently, special projects based on existing models will brighten up the wait for these new products: on August 16, as part of the automobile week in Monterey (USA, California), the premiere of the new Maserati supercar, based on the MC20 model, will take place.

The Maserati MC20 was presented in 2020, it has a mid-engine layout, rear-wheel drive and is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo gasoline V6 Nettuno engine of its own design, its maximum output is 630 hp and 730 Nm. In 2022, the Maserati MC20 Cielo with a convertible debuted. In 2023, the Maserati MCXtrema track supercar and Maserati GT2 racing car, based on the MC20, were released.

The supercar, which will be unveiled on August 16 and whose teaser is shown in the title image, according to the press release, inherits the racing spirit of the Maserati GT2 and will become the new flagship of the Maserati model line. We believe this means that the new supercar will receive an advanced aerodynamic body kit and a more powerful version of the V6 Nettuno, while it will be road legal.
Meanwhile, the electric version of the Maserati MC20 announced in 2020 has still not been presented.
