MOSCOW, August 1 British writer and author of the Harry Potter series of books, J.K. Rowling, ridiculed the work of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to protect athletes, saying that the Paris Olympics will be remembered for the injustice done to Italian Angela Carini in the boxing tournament.
On Thursday, Carini gave up after 46 seconds of the 1/8 finals of the boxing tournament against Algerian Iman Khelif. Earlier, the IOC approved the participation of Khelif and Lin Yuting from Taiwan in the women's Olympic tournament, despite the fact that at the 2023 World Championships in India, they were unable to pass a gender test, which showed the presence of XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone in their bodies. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that athletes with male genetic characteristics should not be allowed to participate in women's competitions.
«A young female boxer has just lost everything she worked and trained for because you allowed a man to step into the ring against her. You are disgusting, your «protection of athletes» is laughable. Paris 2024 will forever be tainted by the cruel injustice towards Carini,» Rowling wrote on social media.
Earlier, Rowling was accused of transphobia after her statements on social media. The writer shared an article on her account that discussed «people with periods.» In a humorous way, she suggested remembering the familiar word «woman.» However, Twitter users (now X) condemned Rowling in the comments for her allegedly disrespectful attitude toward transgender people, transsexuals, and other minorities.
