MOSCOW, July 29 Recommendations for increasing the effectiveness of online courses on studying Russian as a foreign language have been formulated by scientists from the Pushkin Institute. According to the researchers, the methodology adapted to the specifics of social networks will help popularize the Russian language and culture abroad. The results were published in the journal «Russistics» in the article «Digital technologies in teaching Russian: current state and prospects».
Social networks are becoming an important element of the electronic learning system today due to their popularity and functionality. Users immerse themselves in the language environment, communicating in the foreign language they are studying with native speakers, and also turn to ready-made online courses and create new ones, said scientists from the A.S. Pushkin State Institute of the Russian Language.
The university explained that classes organized by enthusiasts on the Internet are popular with the younger generation due to the accessibility of training, the freedom to choose the place and time to obtain knowledge, as well as the opportunity to make new acquaintances with other users.
Scientists from the Pushkin Institute have studied online courses of Russian as a foreign language in various social networks and formulated recommendations for increasing their effectiveness. According to the experts, the novelty of the approach they proposed is in finding directions and prospects for using social networks as educational platforms.
«»It is important to understand that such training is not a replacement for traditional training; rather, it is an option for self-learning a language or supporting communication between users of an online course. For training to be successful, it is necessary to establish the characteristics of users of social services, their interests, educational needs and include in the educational process those that are relevant for a particular time texts,” said Elkhan Azimov, professor of the Department of Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language at the Pushkin Institute.
He added that in order to promote the Russian language in the world, leading educational institutions in Russia should support new teaching formats and develop special educational programs focused on using the functionality of social networks.
Despite the shortcomings of social media education (lack of systemic approach and clear assessment criteria), it is currently attracting more and more people interested in gaining knowledge about Russia. This is due to the fact that the practices offered on the Internet, according to the researchers, largely take into account the interests, needs, capabilities and specifics of the audience, and their authors are on the same wavelength with their readers and viewers, since they are united by a common network space.
In addition, complete immersion in the digital environment provides virtually unlimited opportunities for using modern computer technologies, which creates the effect of presence and even participation, because each user can evaluate or comment on the educational content themselves, the university noted.
At this stage, scientists are faced with the task of studying various means of communication in social networks, finding out their advantages, determining the optimal combination of traditional methods of learning a language with new teaching tools and supporting independent acquisition of the language with the help of computer technologies that stimulate communication in the language being studied.
