The initial list of the annual prestigious competition includes 41 models, of which only two are purely Chinese brands. The finalists will be announced in the fall, and the winner — early next year.
The organizers of the European Car of the Year award have named the participants of the new season. Let us recall that, according to the current rules, new cars can participate in the competition, that is, those that went on sale during the calendar year. In addition, the model must be present in at least five «old world» markets. The Best Car of Europe 2025 is chosen by a jury consisting of 59 automotive journalists from 22 countries (representatives from Russia, for obvious reasons, are not on the list, although they were previously on it).
If 28 cars participated in the competition last season, then this year there are 41 models. Although this is only a preliminary list. The final version will be published on November 15, the finalists will be announced at the end of the same month. Be that as it may, almost all the cars, of course, are electrified in one way or another.

Interestingly, there are only two purely Chinese models competing for the title of the best car in Europe 2025. Last season, there were five “Chinese” cars — the Nio model and as many as four models from BYD (and one of them made it to the final!). This time, the list includes Xpeng and, again, BYD — they are represented by the G6 and Seal U crossovers, respectively (in its native China, the Seal U is sold under the name Song Plus). However, in reality, there are more Chinese cars… After all, MG and smart are also participating in the competition, and they have essentially ceased to be “European”: the first brand belongs to the Chinese concern SAIC, and modern “smarts” are made by the Geely Auto holding. In China, both brands of cars are mainly produced.

The true «old world» brands included in the list are: Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Citroen, Cupra, Dacia, Fiat, Maserati, Mini, Opel, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, Skoda, Volkswagen and Volvo. By the way, it is also interesting that the Maserati Grecale SUV has already competed for the title of the best car in Europe — in the 2023 season. Most likely, the electric version of the Folgore is now included in the list — it debuted just after cars with internal combustion engines. The current competition also includes American Ford, Korean Hyundai, KGM (ex-SsangYong) and Kia, Japanese Lexus, Mazda, Suzuki and Toyota.

According to preliminary data, the winner will be announced at the Brussels Motor Show, which will open early next year. And the jury recognized the electric crossover Renault Scenic as the European Car of 2024.
