Caracas residents took part in a march and motorcycle rally to support Maduro
In recent days, Venezuela has seen unrest related to the presidential elections of July 28. After Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner, the country found itself on the brink of a political crisis. Today, thousands of his supporters took to the streets of Caracas to express support for their leader and call for peace in the country. The rally, which ended at the Miraflores Palace, was the largest action in support of the government since the elections, RIA Novosti reports.
Among the participants in the march, one could see both pedestrians and a large column of bikers who rode in the vanguard of the 8-kilometer route. During the rally, slogans about peace and unity were heard, as well as congratulations on the victory in the elections.
But the joy of supporters contrasted with growing discontent among the opposition. The day after the election, protests erupted in Caracas and other cities across the country. Opposition groups who disagreed with the results of the vote took to the streets, leading to clashes with law enforcement. The clashes were so severe that protesters attacked more than 250 police posts, and vandalism and looting became commonplace.
Law enforcement has responded harshly to the protests: Maduro says more than 1,200 people have been detained and another thousand are wanted. The charges against those detained range from the destruction of public infrastructure to incitement to hatred and terrorism.
In the context of these events, Diosdado Cabello, First Vice President of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), made a statement that «every time there are elections in any country in which the left either wins or is about to win, imperialism immediately intervenes.» He emphasized that Venezuela has been resisting attacks by imperialism and its allies for 25 years.
The situation in the country remains tense, and the future of Venezuela depends on how events unfold in the coming days and weeks. Maduro's supporters continue to express their support, while the opposition does not intend to give up. The EU and the US have warned Nicolas Maduro that if he does not voluntarily give up the presidency, he will be «responsible». Russia has accepted the elections in Venezuela and called on the opposition to accept defeat.
