«Standed up for a kid, got his eye gouged out.» The Horrible Story of a Russian Boxer

Shocking news came over the weekend: Russian and European champion Dmitry Dvali lost an eye while standing up for a teenager who was being beaten by a crowd of men in Feodosia. What is known at the moment is in the Sport article.
Dvali's personal trainer Ivan Shchelok said that the 23-year-old boxer came to the Black Sea coast to conduct a master class for young athletes. Early in the morning on Sunday, July 28, at about 6:35, Dvali and another team member went for a swim in the sea and at the same time to see the city. Returning to the hotel, they noticed a crowd of men beating up a teenager on the embankment.
«They stood up for him, Evgeny pulled one of them aside, and the rest of them pounced on Dima. And they were all strong and tough, athletic men, about 25-26 years old. And Dima weighs only 54 kilograms,» Shchyolok said.
The brutal fight resulted in the boxer and cutman Evgeny receiving serious injuries. Evgeny's arm was broken. In order for the bone to heal successfully, he has already undergone an operation to insert a pin. But Dmitry suffered more: doctors diagnosed a fracture of the orbital bone and serious eye damage.

«They attacked him in a crowd, hitting him with their hands and feet, one blow with the end of a boot went straight into his eye. He has a very serious eye injury. Then Dima was taken to a hospital in Feodosia, from where he was sent to Simferopol, and then they arrived in Moscow via Krasnodar on Monday evening. He has been in the hospital since Monday,» the coach added.
«Boxing saved me»Dmitry Dvali was born in the small town of Pugachev in the Saratov region. His family did not have much money, so he had to rely only on his own strength. He studied well, dreamed of getting into a prestigious university, but, as often happens, for radical changes in life you need money, which his parents did not have.
«There was a second path — I hung out with guys who were, so to speak, vagabonds. And I don't know who I would have been. One of my friends was put in a juvenile colony until he was 18, one went to vocational school, a plasterer-painter. And that's the kind of company I hung out with. I can't imagine how it would have happened. It's good that boxing saved me,» Dvali honestly admitted in an interview with «Championship».

In 2009, the Dvali family decided to move to the Moscow region, then friends recommended a boxing section where they could try classes for free. Dmitry's parents initially took his hobby lightly, but with his first successes it became clear that this was their son's destiny.

The victories started coming one after another, and in 2019, Dvali managed to become the third number of the youth team of the Russian national team. For him, this was a turning point, which he spoke about with trepidation in an interview with the Russian Boxing Federation.
«Here, the understanding that I represent my country came more clearly. I felt pride. At the World Championship among military personnel, I went out with a flag on my chest to the anthem. I really liked it. Now, as a main participant in the men's team, I feel proud, and I like being in its location with athletes who took part in the Olympic Games,» Dvali said.

At the same time, the dream of Olympic gold appeared. The desire to achieve this goal was so strong that even the wallpaper of Dvali's phone was a photo of the Olympic gold medal. The athlete himself called it a psychological technique:
«I saw such a technique somewhere in psychology, where the main idea is that it is important to visualize your dreams. That's why the medal on the wallpaper is always next to me. It pushes me and motivates me. I see it all the time, and it helps me.»
Large-scale plansDvali had 55 fights, of which only seven ended in defeat. During this time, he managed to win a bronze medal at the World Championship, and in 2024 he achieved the title of European Champion.

In July, he had one of his most significant fights against the experienced 31-year-old Uzbek boxer Shakhobiddin Zoirov. Dvali was looking forward to meeting the Olympic champion.
«I am very interested in this fight. You can only get better by competing with the best. So for me, this is a serious challenge at the moment. But I expect that in the future I will have even more serious challenges. We want to achieve the maximum in both Olympic and professional boxing. At the moment, the fight with Zoirov is the main challenge. But I emphasize the phrase «at the moment,» Match TV quotes Dvali as saying.
The fight lasted eight rounds and, unexpectedly for those who bet on experience, ended in a draw.
After the incident in Feodosia, the head coach of the Russian men's boxing team, Viktor Farkhutdinov, noted in a conversation that Dvali has great prospects.
«»Dmitry is a very capable and good boxer, he is a prize-winner of the World Championship, and this year he confidently won the European Championship. He recently had a very good fight with the Olympic champion from Uzbekistan Zoirov. I have high hopes for him. Dmitry is a very kind and decent person It’s simply inconceivable that such a terrible situation could happen to him. But I was not surprised that he stood up for a weak man and immediately came to his aid. I want to wish Dmitry only health,” said Farkhutdinov.
But about the big ones. dreams in sports will most likely have to be forgotten. After the fight in Feodosia, Dmitry does not harbor illusory hopes, admitting that he will no longer have a career in boxing.

After the incident, Dvali turned to the police with a statement. On Saturday, the SUSC press service reported that a criminal case had been opened under the article “hooliganism.” The Investigative Committee petitions to transfer the case to its jurisdiction.
The Russian Boxing Federation (FBI) did not remain aloof from what was happening, releasing a statement regarding the situation with Dvali.
“The Russian Boxing Federation holds on » — reported in the organization's press release.
