Chinese state-owned automaker GAC continues to exercise the naming of its subsidiary electric car brand, trying to increase its appeal in the global market.
In 2018, GAC launched a subsidiary brand, Aion, under which it produces mass-market and relatively affordable electric vehicles. In 2022, Aion launched a premium sports sub-brand, Hyper, which split from Aion in 2023 and became an independent brand. At the moment, Hyper models have completely disappeared from Aion's consumer website and are only presented on its own website. Yesterday, GAC announced that it was renaming Hyper to Hyptec, although the brand's website address remains the same — hyper.com.cn, but on social networks it is already listed as Hyptec. The new name is an abbreviation obtained by merging the words Hyper/Hypercar and Technology.
Hyptec SSR 1/3 Hyptec SSR 2/3 Hyptec SSR 3/3
The renaming was necessary in light of the Hyptec brand's imminent entry into the global market — the new verbal construction seems more successful to Chinese managers than just Hyper, they say, it more accurately emphasizes the value of the brand. First of all, Hyptec «electric trains» will develop the countries of Southeast Asia, then according to the program — the Middle East, South America and Europe.
Hyptec GT
In China, sales of the Aion brand have dropped sharply since last fall, and from January to July of this year, it sold 212,604 cars, which is 16.4% less than sales for the same period last year. GAC has not yet published separate statistics on Hyper/Hyptec, but in general it is clear that the management of the concern is not very satisfied with the current results of both brands and is trying to compensate for the decline in China through exports. The recently launched compact crossover GAC Aion V of the second generation is also positioned as global.
Hyptec HT
There are currently only three models in the Hyptec lineup — the flagship SSR supercar with a three-motor 1225-horsepower power plant, the mid-size single-engine rear-wheel drive liftback GT and the large coupe-like crossover HT, which is offered with both rear-wheel drive (one motor) and all-wheel drive (two motors). This year, the Hyptec model lineup will be replenished with an even larger crossover with a three-row interior.
