Capture by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (Ukrainian Armed Forces) Kursk nuclear power plant is unlikely, but there is a more realistic scenario. This statement was made by a source in the Ukrainian General Staff, cited by The Economist.
The source admits that in order to capture the Kursk NPP, the Ukrainian army would need «an 80-kilometer march from the border and larger forces.»
A more realistic goal is to create a «buffer zone» on the border territory of the Russian Federation, which will help in the negotiations. Also, «immediate attention» is being paid to the Sudzha gas pumping station, which the source calls the only working entry point for Russian gas on the Progress pipeline to Europe.
Earlier, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that it was aware of the situation around the Kursk region, where the nuclear power plant is located, and was monitoring developments.
Meanwhile, Hero of Russia, Major General of Aviation Sergei Lipovoy suggested that Ukrainian militants could try to damage the gas station in Sudzha: «Probably, this is exactly why they went there — to cut off Europe from Russian gas.»
