Ford presented the police crossover Police Interceptor Utility 2025 model year, improved and expanded, while the hybrid version, which no longer has its civilian sibling, the Ford Explorer.
The times when American police officers patrolled the streets in full-size frame sedans remain only in Hollywood films and in the memories of veterans. Nowadays, US law enforcement agencies are purchasing crossovers in batches — such as the Ford Police Interceptor Utility (PIU), made on the basis of the sixth generation Ford Explorer.
The civilian “sixth” Explorer for the North American market last winter underwent a restyling, during which it received The interior is almost completely new and has lost the hybrid version, but the 2025 Ford PIU presented this week retained the pre-reform body and the same range of power plants.
The base power plant for the Ford PIU is a hybrid one: it consists of a 3.3-liter naturally-aspirated petrol V6 with a capacity of 289 liters .With. and a 44-horsepower electric motor implanted into a 10-speed automatic transmission. The maximum total output of the hybrid power plant is 322 hp. and 437 Nm. Charging the traction battery from an external source is not provided. Ford PIU has only all-wheel drive.
The hybrid powertrain is great for patrol mode with its crawling speeds and frequent stops, but as an alternative, Ford offers for the PIU the same 3.3-liter V6 without the hybrid add-on or a more powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline V6 EcoBoost (406 hp, 563 Nm), more fitting the name Interceptor, which in translation from English to Russian means «interceptor».
The updated Ford PIU comes standard with an external perimeter monitoring system: sensors scan the space around the car and if they detect any movement, the rear view camera and warning signal will automatically turn on, the windows will rise and the locks will lock. The steering wheel has buttons for activating special modes, including a chase mode and a hidden surveillance mode. There is a special lockable compartment for weapons and evidence in the cabin, and the trunk door is equipped with a double lock with a timer: the first lock is unlocked from the cabin, then there are 45 seconds to get to the door and unlock the second lock, that is, the intruder will not slip through.
The rear part of the police crossover body is reinforced in case of ramming and contact pursuit, several levels of armor are offered as options. The cabin has an old front panel, but an updated fully virtual 12.3-inch instrument panel. The automatic transmission selector is designed in the form of an old-fashioned poker on the steering column — the civilian sixth-generation Explorers did not have this. The front seats have wear-resistant fabric upholstery and reinforced backs that cannot be cut with a knife, and the rear seat is covered with easy-to-clean vinyl in case the criminal gets it dirty. In addition, of course, there are special signals, a searchlight, a bullbar and other special equipment — the specific configuration depends on the customer and the tasks that the car will perform.
