The lyrical comedy opens the festival. The main character Sasha works as a security guard in a store and feels like a loser: his life hasn't worked out, he has no mental strength left for anything new. Suddenly, he falls in love with the energetic and eccentric Yulia (Aglaya Tarasova) — and everything changes at once. The story is about how important it is not to give up in difficult situations and to believe that everything will definitely work out. The film will be released on August 1.
«The most important thing is to remember that there are many viewers, and they are very different. And there cannot be one film that would meet the needs and tastes of everyone, but there must be an industry that strives for this — for maximum diversity. This principle of diversity is the basis for our selection of competition and non-competition programs. There is room for everything — from Stalin-era fairy tale films to contemporary video art,» said the festival's program director, Andrei Apostolov.
«Cell of Society»
In a young family, the daughter goes to kindergarten for the first time. The mother, feeling free after a prolonged maternity leave, cannot restrain herself from light flirting. The girl tells her father about her new «love», and the threat of divorce hangs over the parents. The social drama by director Alena Zvantsova raises questions about modern family values and the difficulties that people face after the birth of a child.
«King Lear»
Modern Yakut cinema is discussed by many for its originality and openness to experiments. Sergey Potapov shot a film in a boarding house for the elderly and disabled, and its real residents played together with professional actors.
The main character, Alexey, came here at the behest of his granddaughters. He was noticed by a young director who was going to stage a play based on William Shakespeare in the boarding house, and Alexey was ideal for the role of King Lear.
«It seems to me that there is no specific trend in themes and genres now. People just love good, high-quality cinema, honest, highly artistic. I would note that the viewer is especially intelligent now, very often we underestimate them, we think that they only need bread and circuses,» said the festival's general producer Oksana Mikheeva.
«Redrum»
Irina Esterlis' film raises the difficult topic of abortion. In the thriller, the main character decides to terminate her pregnancy and then plunges into reflection. Does the motto «My body is my business» really work? How different is a nascent being from its parent? Anya wants to find answers to these questions from her friends and acquaintances, but suddenly they all start dying under strange circumstances.
«This year, the entire competition program is premieres. We didn't set ourselves such a goal; our regulations allow us to take films that have been at other festivals. But it turned out that they want to give us premiere works — that's great,» Mikheeva admitted.

Vakhtang Zhorzholiani's psychological drama lasts only an hour, but manages to fully impress viewers with the protagonist's hopeless grief. Unemployed alcoholic Sergei has no goals or emotions in life except for grief over his deceased father. He learns from an inadequate acquaintance that a relative's voice can be heard in mineral water if a sacrifice is made. The story is about the extent of madness one can reach if one has no strength to survive a personal tragedy.
«Liar»
The main theme of the festival this year is fairy tales. The out-of-competition program is dedicated to them: films from previous years are displayed alongside new releases. One of them is Yulia Trofimova's «Liar» about a 17-year-old girl who gets a summer job in a cafe. One day she has to lie, but every lie has consequences.

«You don’t need to be a genius and have special film erudition to notice a fabulous trend — the main one for modern Russian film industry. We decided to dedicate this year’s festival to him.
In fact, the modern Russian film industry is very young and dates back to approximately the time of the release of «Brothers» and «Night Watch», but the fairy-tale films of recent years, in my opinion, are called upon to clearly define the continuity of modern cinema in relation to both the great tradition of national folklore and the cult heritage of late Soviet television, from where Cheburashka, Alisa Selezneva, the Bremen Town Musicians and so on returned to us,» said Andrey Apostolov, the festival's program director.
The Gorky Fest film festival will be held in the Nizhny Novgorod region from July 12 to 18, 2024. Admission to all events is free upon registration on the website.
