Sir Keir Starmer said it was fair to express concern over the expansion of Sadiq Khan in Ulez following the Labor uprising.
Danny Beals, party candidate in the upcoming Uxbridge by-election and South Ruislip, urged Mr Khan to delay extending the green scheme next month in a direct challenge to the mayor from Labor.
During the visit. at a school in Gillingham, Sir Keir was asked if Mr. Beals, whose views are shared by other opposition supporters in the capital, is «right» when he «sticks up» for his potential constituents.
The leader of the Labor Party responded: «Danny Beals is our candidate in Uxbridge, also a very good candidate, and he is right to express concern on behalf of those who he hopes will be his voters regarding Oulez, because we all understand what an impact that is.» affects the financial situation. .
“I think it's important to get the context right when discussing. The law requires combating air pollution. So it's not just a political choice that is made in the abstract… that's why the first Ulez was represented by a Conservative mayor, so for the purposes of by-elections it's used as a partisan political tool.
“But in fact, the legalization of this is in legislation that no one can evade, and the first to implement the Ulez scheme was the Tory administration. But Danny Beals is right about what he said speaking out for what he hopes will be his constituents.» The expansion of the low emission scheme has led to many protests. Photo: Lucy North/PA
Mr Khan's plans, which will take effect on 29 August, will include a £12.50 daily charge for vehicles that violate emission standards and are currently at the center of a legal battle between the mayor and a coalition of five conservative councils.
Near the start of Sir Keir's speech on education reform, he was interrupted by protesters who criticized him after Labor abandoned its flagship plan to spend £28bn a year on new green jobs and technologies.
One Man said: “We need a new green deal right now. Stop making U-turns, Sir Keir. The second asked him: «On which side is the Labor Party?»
However, Sir Keir rejected the idea that he had made a «reversal» in politics, despite the fact that Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, admitted that a key promise would not be fulfilled until the party was in power for at least two to one and a half years.
Green New Deal Rising, a climate crisis campaign group, claimed responsibility for the Twitter disruption and called on Labor to «take our future seriously and address the climate and economic crisis.»
In his most scathing rebuke of Just Stop Oil to date, Sir Keir said the group's activists should «just stop» and accused them of «arrogance» after their high-profile stunts at the Ashes and Wimbledon.
» Especially in the last few weeks, they have interrupted iconic sporting events, causing massive disruptions. There is great arrogance involved that only they understand the arguments and know how to win.”
Asked how he would fund plans for 6,500 new teachers, £2,500 per new teacher and classroom upgrades, Sir Keir said the measures would be 'more than adequately covered' by Labor's £1bn sterling they will receive by ending private school charitable status.
Last month, think tank EDSK warned that removing private school charitable status would likely bring in £600m less than Sir Keir hoped, and may not even generate any income.
Sir Keir insisted that the future Labor government would negotiate with the unions «every day of the week» until the ongoing teachers' strikes were resolved, but he refused to lean on what the party would like to see in the future guide for transgender people. schools are expected in the coming weeks.
He also distanced himself from Jonathan Ashworth, his secretary for shadow work and pensions, by clarifying that removing the two-child benefit cap is not Labor policy, despite Mr. Ashworth called the restriction «disgusting».
