Joe Biden joked that he looked like Harry Styles compared to Rupert Murdoch when he addressed concerns about starting the campaign at the age of 80.

Dinner speech The White House Correspondents Association On Saturday, the president told his black-tie audience: “You might think I don't like Rupert Murdoch. It's just not true.”

“How can I not love a guy who makes me look like Harry Styles?

“Call me old, I call it seasoned. You say that I am ancient; I say I'm wise,” he added.

Media mogul Mr Murdoch is still working at age 92.

Biden announced his campaign on Monday, asking Americans for a chance to “get things done.” If re-elected, he will be 86 at the end of his second term.

The dispute over Mr. Biden's age has been the subject of a flurry of jokes from guest speaker, comedian Roy Wood Jr.

No scandal has been more devastating than that of “Joe Biden awake?” he said to a laugh.

“Say what you want about our president, but when you wake up from your slumber, the job will be done,” he added.

“He may doze off, but then this: “Infrastructure bill, student loan forgiveness… did we free Britney Greener?” Free Britney Griner!”

The dinner, held in 1921, is one of the most prestigious events on the political calendar.

Usually – but not always – the president is present, the event is a good-natured truce in which hostilities between the White House and The media is largely on hold.

In 2022, Biden became the first president to attend the event in six years after it was boycotted by Donald Trump and then canceled during the pandemic.

On Saturday night, Mr. Biden returned to the presidential tradition of self-deprecation and occasional mockery of his opponents.

Mr. Biden targeted Mr. Murdoch's Fox News during his address.

The Murdoch-owned conservative TV channel has had a turbulent few weeks, settling a $787.5bn (£626.6m) libel case with Dominion Voting Systems and parting ways with its star host Tucker Carlson.

“I” “I would call Fox 'honest, fair and truthful'. But then I'll be sued for defamation,” he told his audience of 2,600 in a crowded ballroom in Washington, D.C.

Dinner guests had to face protesters angry at Biden's decision to allow drilling in the Arctic despite promising not to. remain gloomy: the latest Gallup poll showed his approval rating has fallen to 37%, the lowest of his presidency.

He also does not enjoy unanimous support for the presidential candidacy among Democrats.

Thursday, a Fox News poll showed he was supported by 62% of Democrats, with rival candidates Robert Kennedy Jr. and Marianne Williamson garnering 28% of the vote between them.

Poll: President Joe Biehn's approval ratings

An Emerson poll found that Mr. Biden's opponents were backed by 29 percent of Democrats for the nomination.

While Mr. Biden has a huge lead, the numbers remain confusing, especially with the president about to forfeit his primary elections in New Hampshire.

Traditionally, New Hampshire has been the first state to have a primary. But the Democrats have decided the honor should go to South Carolina.

The party establishment says South Carolina, where Mr. Biden's 2020 victory saved his shaky campaign from disaster, more accurately reflects the US than predominantly white New Hampshire.

But the state refused to relinquish its first-in-the-nation status and vowed to hold a primary despite the likelihood that Mr. Biden's name would not be on the ballot.

< p>If he doesn't get a majority of votes thanks to the “write-in” vote of supporters, he will most likely lose New Hampshire to one of his rivals.
