Woody Allen often dined with Jeffrey Epstein and invited the disgraced financier to film screenings after he was convicted of a sex crime in 2008.
The Oscar-winning director was known to be friends with Epstein, but a bunch of documents have revealed new details about the extent of their relationship.
This shows that the couple often talked together after Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution with a minor in 2008.
He was required to register as a sex offender and was sentenced to 18 months in prison as part of a plea deal.
For several years, the two men had been planning visits to art studios, Sotheby's auction house. and watching movies together.
According to documents seen by The Wall Street Journal, 87-year-old Allen and Epstein were supposed to meet almost every month in 2014 and 2015.
Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Preven, also attended dozens of dinners at Epstein's mansion, the newspaper reported.A spokesperson for Allen and his wife said: «Woody and Soon-Yi lived in the same area as Epstein and were often invited to dinner parties at his townhouse.
«There were always other guests at those meetings.»
Documents show that Allen and Epstein had a long friendship.
In late 2012, Allen's assistant contacted Epstein and said: «Woody was wondering if Jeffrey would be interested in seeing his new movie today or tomorrow? — and Epstein replied that he was free.
In 2013, the two men planned several trips to the studio of artist Jeff Koons, according to documents. Koons did not respond to The Wall Street Journal's request for comment.
And in October 2014, Epstein planned that Allen would teach film editing classes in the financier's townhouse for a group of guests watching Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. ” according to The Wall Street Journal.
A spokesman told the newspaper that Allen «never had a business meeting with Epstein.» They added that the director never «spent time with [Epstein] without Soon-Yi.»
How Epstein seduced Wall Street
The documents seen by The Wall Street Journal also shed new light on nature and frequency Epstein's meetings with a wide network of influential figures long after his 2008 sex crime conviction.
They include details of how Lawrence Summers, former finance minister and former president of Harvard University, continued to meet with Epstein even after Harvard no longer accepted his donations.
And that Ehud Barak, former prime minister Israel, visited Epstein dozens of times and flew his private jet to visit his mansions in Florida and New York.
Mr Summers said he «deeply regretted contact with Epstein after his conviction.»
Mr Barak told the Wall Street Journal: “In retrospect, [Epstein] seems like a terrible version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but at the time seemed like an intelligent man with good social connections and a broad outlook. areas of interest, from science to geopolitics. He said he never participated in any parties or events with girls or women.
Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 after prosecutors concluded that they were not bound by the terms of his 2008 agreement, which included a non-prosecution agreement.
A month later, he was found dead in a prison cell.
