Ollie Robinson finished the day 7-59. bowling — with his new teammate Steve Smith enjoying a superb view during his second miss — before revealing that he recently had an injection to ease his back pain.
Robinson took seven of 59 to take out Sussex are in a strong position against Worcestershire when Smith had to wait for his first innings on his County Championship debut. They are 63 to one, 201 behind with Smith and Cheteshwar Pujara in the cage.
Robinson didn't seem to be burdened by his recent back problems. He received a jab before the first game of the season last month for «a little soreness» in a «joint that was slightly irritated» in his back.
At the beginning of last summer, he suffered from back problems, and although it was not so serious, he says his body needs treatment. The blow was to «nip him in the bud» in front of Ashes and he reported that he «feels good». after throwing 17 overs in his second game of the season. He is set to play Sussex matches over the next two weeks.
This made it an important performance for one of England's key players in the Ashes. Smith even lends a helping hand by catching a good day for the Sussex slippers.
Smith is a beat nut, but the fact that he didn't get hit doesn't make the day a waste. . There was some disappointment among Sussex fans when their third truly world class player, Pujara, won the toss and chose to bowl because it delayed Smith's first pitch for the club. To put it simply, batting was hard while Robinson was bowling. When he was gone, everything looked simple. He took four wickets in the first hour, dropping Worcestershire to 44 for five before a return kick led by the elegant Adam Hawes, which was complemented by lower-order hard shots from Matthew Waite and Joe Leach. The two shared 103 points while Robinson was out of the attack, but after seeing the tea, he came back and took the last three wickets without missing a try.
Robinson was overly critical when he expressed disappointment at the length, which he rode, and he was expensive by his standards (with a short border towards the Women's Pavilion and the attack fields, the runs flowed freely).
