Alpine, part of the Renault Group, is developing a completely new lineup called Dream Garage (translated into Russian as “garage dreams»), the first-born of which in 2024 will be the A290 electric hot hatch. Yesterday was shown its conceptual forerunner — A290_β with an accentuated racing aesthetics and landing formula 1 + 2.
The Alpine A110 coupe is the latest «hydrocarbon» model in the history of the French brand, all upcoming new items will be electric vehicles. In the promising Dream Garage line announced two years ago, three models are announced — a hot hatch, a crossover and a sports car. The hot hatch will go into production first — in 2024, it is made on the basis of the promising new Renault 5, that is, on the CMF-B EV platform, the technical features of which we described in March in a separate article, here we just recall that the new French hatches will receive independent rear suspension with an eye for exquisite handling.

The Alpine A290_β concept is designed to warm up the public ahead of the debut of the production version of the hot hatch. The appearance of the production model will largely repeat the concept, but the Spartan cabin with a 1 + 2 landing formula and an integrated roll cage will not be offered to buyers — instead, there will be a traditional layout with a bunch of amenities on board. In fact, the only thing that will migrate from the interior of the concept to the interior of the serial A290 is the OV key on the steering wheel. OV stands for Overtake and the key activates a 10-second boost mode.

The body of the concept has many interesting details — for example, mugs in the rear bumper: they do not imitate exhaust pipes, but cooling fans in powerful computers, that is, they hint at the high performance of the hot hatch. The original wheels with square hubs will definitely be in the production model, as well as the “four-eyed” front end and the developed spoiler on the tailgate. The number of doors is still a mystery: in some branded shots, the body is 3-door, in others — 5-door. Introduced in 2021, the concept of the future Renault 5 was a 5-door.

The number 290 in the model index stands for: 2 is an indication of the B-class, 90 is a sign of universal/practical models. The main competitor of the Alpine A290 on the market will be the Italian electric hot hatch Abarth 500e, which has already entered the market, and it will also be a price point for the «Frenchman»: in Germany, the Abarth 500e now costs from 37,990 euros.
