Graeme Sutherland, FirstGroup Chief Executive, said: “[We] are very proud to serve communities across the North of England and Scotland, transporting millions of passengers and introducing new trains, new routes and more places for our customers.”
“ Our team has worked very hard to improve services, including by recruiting and training more drivers than ever before. We have also worked closely with DfT and Transport for the North on an agreed recovery plan as well as an improved overtime offer for our drivers.
“Today's decision does not change our belief in the important role of private rail operators in delivery vital, environmentally friendly transport for customers and communities across the UK.”
Anthony Smith, chief executive of watchdog Transport Focus, said: “TransPennine Express passengers have endured unacceptable service for far too long. In our latest survey, TransPennine Express was ranked as the worst performing train operator, with only 67% of passengers satisfied with the punctuality of their journey.
“Whatever organization provides TransPennine Express rail services, under whatever contracts they want see a much more reliable service. Clearly, passengers deserve better, and the operator needs to take action to improve efficiency and restore passenger confidence.”
