The KTM 890 SMT had its world premiere last April. The Russian dealers of the Austrian brand will have a novelty that combines the driving character of a supermoto with the versatility of a “tourist” in July.
In 2009, the Austrian company KTM introduced the 990 SMT model, the letters in its index stand for Supermoto Touring and directly indicate the concept of this peculiar hybrid: the developers tried to combine the qualities of two different types of motorcycle in it — a recklessly aggressive supermoto and a comfortable touring enduro. The KTM 990 SMT stayed in service until 2013 inclusive and collected conflicting reviews: some motorists and experts believe that it combines the shortcomings of a supermoto and a “tourist” rather than advantages. Nevertheless, ten years later, KTM engineers tried to make a new motorcycle in the same mixed genre — meet the KTM 890 SMT.

The technical basis for the KTM 890 SMT was the canonical touring enduro KTM 890 Adventure R, from which the new crossover inherited an in-line 889 cc deuce (105 hp, 100 Nm) and a 6-speed gearbox (Quickshifter + is offered as an option), but the chassis has been significantly modified for new tasks. To give the original «tourist» the agility of a supermoto, the developers increased the slope of the front fork, reduced the seat height by 20 mm and optimized its shape for an aggressive supermoto style of riding, reduced the volume of the fuel tank from 20 to 15.8 liters and reprofiled it for better girth when cornering aggressively.

Wind protection is shortened, the frame is reinforced, suspension travel is reduced — all for better control of the motorcycle in extreme conditions. 17-inch wheels borrowed from a KTM 890 Duke R streetfighter are shod with grippy Michelin PowerGP asphalt tires. Braking is handled by twin 320mm front discs, a 260mm rear disc and custom Bosch 9.1 MP ABS with Supermoto mode to lock the rear wheel into corners. The 5-inch electronic instrument panel is scratch-resistant and non-glare in the sun, it has a variety of electronic settings, and a hardcore Track driving mode has been added to the menu especially for the KTM 890 SMT. Heated grips, cruise control and a range of travel gear are available for an extra charge.

Overall, the KTM 890 SMT should have a more harmonious character than its predecessor. 990 SMT, and whether it is or not, it will be possible to check soon. The official distributor of the KTM brand in Russia is Avtodom JSC, in its showrooms the new crossover will appear in July, that is, in the midst of the motorcycle season. Price not yet announced.
