UK faces 'cheese blockade' on European purchases

UK faces "blockade" cheese and meat products from Europe, as part of plans for new Brexit border checks, the government has been alerted.

Industry leaders have sounded the alarm over proposals to impose border controls on goods arriving from the continent from late October.

Additional bureaucratic red tape means that the veterinarian will have to sign all "medium risk" food, including unpasteurized cheese, and fresh and frozen meats.

Last month, ministers revealed plans to finally introduce safety checks that have been put on hold since the UK left the EU in early 2020 of the year.

A massive shock is coming

Shane Brennan, chief executive of the Cold Chain Federation, warned controls would make it much more difficult for some goods to enter the UK.

«We will see EU cheese and meat suppliers find themselves unable to fulfill their Christmas orders on 1 November» , he told the Telegraph.

“This will be a strong shock to the system, and as a result, paralysis will occur, while everything should be reset.

“We are not talking about that the shelves are empty. We are talking about the fact that the choice has been greatly reduced, especially in the first 8-12 weeks.

“Some items won't be available at all in the UK at first, and then they will become much more limited. available and much more expensive.»

A step back to the 1950s

Mr Brennan urged the government to rethink, saying the need for veterinary checks was «a 19th century solution to a 21st century problem» .

“We leave our food supplies at the mercy of the German-Polish and Dutch veterinarians, who don’t care if we get it or not,” he added.

“This is a step back to the 1950s. in terms of the types of supply chain options we have, in terms of getting goods from Europe.”

EU countries applied a full set of checks to goods arriving from the UK on the first day after Brexit. , but the UK did not reciprocate.

Planned border controls have been postponed four times, most recently in April last year due to concerns. they will exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, former Brexit Opportunity Minister, has repeatedly said in Cabinet that the UK should develop a system with a much lighter approach.

But some industries , especially the agricultural industry, are pushing for the introduction of checks for goods coming from the EU.

Creating a 'world-class' border

After their original border control plans were dismissed as unworkable, Whitehall officials returned with a new model last month.

They said it would save companies $400 million £600 million a year from the original plan and will create a 'world-class' digital frontier.< /p>

However, the new system was expected to cost businesses £600 million more than the current provision and it will not fully implemented within 18 months.

Baroness Neville-Rolfe, Cabinet Minister, when introducing the model, said it would provide Britain with “the most efficient border in the world.”

“We protect British consumers and businesses, using technology and data to relieve the burden where possible,” she told them.

The UK is legally bound to introduce checks on goods from the EU under both the terms of the Brexit trade deal and World Trade Organization rules .
