The last time Stuart Broad saw David Warner, they had a glass of red wine in Hobart and thought their rivalry was over.
But now the two old-timers are lining up in line up for another fight in the highly anticipated series Ashes has been running since 2005, and there's no doubt that Broad's performance as he won Warner bowling on his first day at Edgbaston would be a great theatrical performance.
Winning the Ashes comes down to more than one head-to-head battle, but nothing could sum up the Ashes' failed tour in England 18 months ago other than Broad missing the first test on the greenfield in Brisbane, sacking Warner seven times in Ashes 2019.
The wide bowling alley around the gate, aiming at stumps with a wobbly seam, had Warner staring at the ceiling of his hotel room at night as he struggled to sleep. His anxiety reached such a point that the Australian authorities considered that in 2019 he was playing with a man, not a ball.
In fact, Warner was 35-of-7 against Broad in 104 balls in 2019, averaging just five against him and just 9.5 overall for the series. He fought so hard that the memory of that trip nearly cost him his place on this one.
Broad vs. Warner by the Numbers
Warner was named to Australia's squad for the World Test final against India and was the first two Ash Tests. but if Brod strikes again, it could end his career.
Broad, a great bowler and great survivor, will be England's senior lead against Ireland in the first Test of the summer after a slew of injuries suffered by others, and may well continue that role when the Ashes kick off in Birmingham on 16 June. .
Warner and Broad, both 36, have been playing Ashes cricket for ten years. In 13 Tests in England, Warner scored 85 while averaging only 26; the moving ball and lower bounce dampen his natural play.
Most likely, this time he will decide that the attack is the best defense against Broad. He has nothing to lose, and he will be the first to bet on wide flashing. But Brandon McCallum and Ben Stokes have freed Broad over the past 12 months, ridding him of his natural defensive mindset of yielding and instead encouraging him to take the wickets. A fight between Broad and Warner would be a box office spectacle.

"Obviously looking forward to fighting Davey again" Brod said. “We had incredible battles. Ultimately, the biggest praise I can give Davey is the fact that I had to study him completely and change my bowling style because of the success he had against me. He's the one I really enjoyed playing against. He is short-tempered, he competes fiercely. And these characters bring out the best in me.
“I must admit, at the end of the Hobart test last time [January 2022], we had a glass of red and didn’t know if we would play against each other again. I hope we can go to battle again.
“[Justin] Langer made a couple of comments after Ashes 2019 that he thought Davey came on stage in his grid that he was too focused on my bowling style I think. But he's coming out of IPL [Indian Premier League] cricket, a very different format, and having played it for a long time and just got two hundred on Boxing Day against a fantastic South African bowling attack, he's going to have confidence. It will just be interesting to watch.»
The 2019 series was played later in the summer after the World Cup on some worn-out pitches, with Broad admitting it helped his wobbly seam. and put lbw into play. This time, the Ashes will be played at fresher grounds early in the summer to make way for the England and Wales Cricket Board's Hundred tournament in August, which will force Broad to rethink his approach, a process he enjoys.< /p> Warner has 25 hundreds and 8158 runs in 103 tests. "I' I need to adjust my length and change " Broad admitted. "The thing is, you can't tell the width of the bowl to David Warner, so my line won't change.
Sounding as excited about this Ashes as he did his first in 2009, Broad added, «I'm still very hungry.» What do they call it, twilight? It's kind of the end of your career, isn't it? Ultimately, I play sports and cricket for the sake of competition. I love the competitive drive that bowling brings. You hit the outside edge and it's not a win, but you pinch one back and it goes through the gate.
"Such feelings make me so addictive. Thanks to Casey [Managing Director Rob Key], Baz [McCallum] and Stokesey — they went above and beyond to play 10 out of 10 for England. So if you still have the desire to compete and everything related to playing for England , 10 out of 10, it brings us back to our dream job.» All Anderson built this streak by throwing accurate shots at their opponents. On Tuesday, Brod was more cautious, but you can't go wrong with the mood. "I love the circus, back and forth between artists" He said. "It's a bit like the boxing match before Edgbaston"
Will he throw a knockout punch? "That would be nice. In the 12th round." He emphasized that it was a joke. “I remember Glenn McGrath saying that Australia would win 5-0. I used to think, why is he saying this? But now I understand. I find this a really good side of Ashes cricket and I hope it continues."
