Florida governor hopes to play on perceived weaknesses of his archrival
Ron DeSantis officially announced his run for White House of Representatives, putting him on a collision course with Donald Trump.
The outspoken Florida governor has adopted Trump's combative style and positions himself as a younger and more elected version of the former US president.
But how do the two Republican candidates compare on key issues in the 2024 presidential election?

Mr. DeSantis has sought to lift gun restrictions, a stance that exploits one of Mr. Trump's key weaknesses.
If he wins the Republican nomination, Mr. DeSantis is likely to be the most vocal candidate to defend the Second Amendment in recent presidential cycles.
He is currently pushing legislation in Florida that would allow state residents to carry concealed firearms. guns in public places without a permit or training requirements.

Trump, meanwhile, has a more complicated history with gun laws.
During his time in the White House, Mr. Trump voiced his support for tougher scrutiny of firearms buyers, but later retracted that position. He also once proposed raising the minimum age to purchase guns to 21.
In 2017, he angered gun rights advocates by banning stocks, a device that allows shooters to fire semi-automatic weapons. weapons much faster after one of them was used in a mass shooting in Las Vegas.
Despite this, Trump has received praise for putting conservative judges who tend to defend gun rights into the federal bench.

Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Trump also clashed over abortion.
Though Mr. Trump won the most significant victory in the history of the anti- abortion by appointing three Supreme Court justices who voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, he was criticized for refusing to take a stand on national legislation.
Trump further confused his position by refusing to say what the restriction on abortion should be during a recent debate at CNN City Hall in New Hampshire.
“Some people are six weeks old, others three weeks, two weeks,” Trump said.

Meanwhile, Mr. DeSantis signed into law a ban on abortion after six weeks in Florida earlier this year, slamming Mr. Trump’s criticism that the restrictions states on abortion were “too tough.”
“I was proud to do it. Whether he signs it or not, he will not answer,” he said.

Mr. DeSantis also takes a tougher stance than Mr. Trump on illegal immigration.
During the CNN town hall, supporters of Mr. -DeSantis was greeted by host Caitlan Collins questioned Mr. Trump about his failure to complete the border wall.
Mr. DeSantis said he wanted the wall completed, a reminder of the broken promise of Mr. Trump's first term.
Earlier this month, Mr. DeSantis signed into law a massive crackdown on illegal immigration in Florida.
According to a new bill, companies with more than 25 employees must check the legal status of employees in a federal database called E-Verify.
The law also provides that relatives or friends who take undocumented immigrants to a hospital, school, or elsewhere can be charged with human smuggling.

As a 2016 candidate, Mr. Trump promised to «strengthen and expand» E-verify, but later said it was difficult for many employers to start the process.
War in Ukraine Many Republican voters oppose further US support for Ukraine. Mr. DeSantis and Mr. Trump oppose supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia, while neither sees the war as a vital US interest.
Mr. DeSantis said he did not wants US troops involved and that we don't have «enough interest to escalate more involvement.»
But he also criticized Vladimir Putin, calling him a «war criminal» who should be «held accountable» for outbreak of war.

Mr. Trump responded by defending Putin, saying Mr. DeSantis' comments were «exactly the kind of simple-minded thinking that led to decades of failed diplomacy and ultimately war.»
Many Republican voters think the US is too supportive of Ukraine.
The China Question Both candidates have been aggressive towards Beijing in the past. on a trip to Japan, South Korea, Israel, and the UK, Mr. DeSantis portrayed China as embroiled in a new cold war with the West and called for action to counter the rise of Beijing.
“Our economy depends on China, and as a result, it gives them more leverage and power. Therefore, we need to defend our economic sovereignty. Part of that is bringing supply chains home and getting more goods here as we build our military, which you know I know this president won't do, but we need to do,” he said.
In May, he signed three bills to «counter the Chinese Communist Party's influence in the state of Florida.»
The bill prohibits Chinese citizens from buying land in the state unless they are also US citizens or permanent residents , and also prevents those using government devices and servers from downloading apps, including Chinese-owned TikTok.

Trump has been credited with shifting the American political consensus towards confronting China, and has vowed to continue to stand up to Beijing if he returns to the White House.
He calls for the end of China's most favored nation trade status. , as well as phasing out imports of pharmaceuticals, electronics, steel and other essential goods from China within four years.

Both Mr. Trump and Mr. DeSantis have been vocal about their opposition to transgender rights.
When he announced his White House bid in November, Mr. Trump said schools favor «gender madness» by allowing transgender women and girls to compete in women's sports.
Trump, speaking to the National Rifle Association in May, vowed to use the powers of the federal government to investigate gender reassignment care for transgender Americans.

Mr. DeSantis restricted the rights of transgender people in Florida , signing last year a bill that opponents called the «Don't Say Gay» law.
It prohibits teachers from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with children attending elementary grades.
