Tina Turner, known as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, has died at the age of 83 after a long illness.

The singer, who gained worldwide fame thanks to a string of soulful hits, including River Deep — Mountain High, The Best and What's Love Got To Do With It, triumphed over early adversity and overcame domestic abuse to become one of the world's most beloved singers.

She died at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

Announcing her death, a spokesperson said the world had lost «a musical legend and role model.»

Oprah Winfrey remembered "our eternal goddess of rock 'n' roll" who, in her words, was «a role model not only for me, but for the whole world.»

Turner was born Anna-Mae Bullock in an isolated hospital in rural Nutbush, Tennessee, later immortalized in her song Nutbush City Limits, on November 26, 1939, to parents Zelma Priscilla and farmer Floyd Richard Bullock.

She endured . difficult childhood, separation from older sister Ellen in her youth, when her parents moved to work at a military factory, and she was sent to live with religious grandparents.

She later said that she did not receive «love» from either parent. Her mother left her father when she was only eleven due to domestic violence, and at thirteen, after her father's remarriage, she and her sister were sent to live with their grandmother in Brownsville, Tennessee.

She became the leading lady of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue and the couple, who married in 1962, toured together for many years. However, Ike mistreated her backstage, forcing her to perform with bronchitis, pneumonia, and a collapsed lung. He choked her, threw hot coffee in her face, beat her and sexually harassed her.

Turner later credited her Buddhist faith with allowing her to leave in 1976. But her 1983 cover of Al Green's «Let's Stay Together» became a runaway success, and she became a worldwide star, with her 1984 album Private Dancer receiving acclaim. The 1993 film What's It Got to Love, which tells the story of her life based on her autobiography, I, Tina, won the Golden Globe for Best Actress.

Turner had two sons: Craig with saxophonist Raymond Hill, who died in 2018, and Ronald with Ike Turner.

She moved to Switzerland and found love later in life with former EMI record executive Erwin Bach. She said of their relationship, «That's the kind of happiness people talk about 'when you don't want anything, when you can finally take a deep breath and say 'It's okay''.»

She officially retired in 2009 after her 'Tina! 50 years». “I was just tired of singing and making everyone happy,” she recalled to The New York Times. «That's all I've ever done in my life.»
