Missing succession? Watch These Dramas About Terrible Rich People Instead

Kendall will be fine: he still has his billions in the bank and his startup, The 100, with «a non-profit ethos but a path to crazy margins.»

For Legacies fans, there's a silver lining: Jesse Armstrong's Black Than Black dramedy isn't the first show in which nasty characters trade snarky dialogue. In honor of Roy's exploding siblings, here are 13 failed Legacy-style shows to watch next.

1. Billions

(Sky/Now/Showtime)

Anyone for a bonus helping of horrible people stabbing each other in the back against the ominously glimmering Manhattan skyline? If the boardroom scam drew you to Legacy, we expect you to enjoy Billions. It stars Damian Lewis as Logan Roy-style hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod, who is in a perpetual battle for supremacy with cantankerous U.S. Justice Department lawyer Chuck Rhodes (Paul Giamatti). Lewis is gone, but a seventh season is on the way, as well as at least four spin-offs: Billions: Miami, Billions: London, Millions (about young enthusiasts) and Trillions.

(Sky/Now/Max)

Mike White's «White Lotus» is for those who like to watch privileged assholes get their retribution. The first season follows a group of spoiled vacationers in Hawaii, while the second season follows a luxury resort in Sicily. On both occasions, the luxurious setting was an absolute relief for the selfish, self-absorbed vacationers led by cult actress Jennifer Coolidge.

Legacy is the spiritual successor to The Vice President, an HBO dark comedy from British writer and producer Armando Iannucci. The similarities are profound: Weep's portrayal of the bickering staff of the preening U.S. Vice President (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) has contributions from writers who went on to work on Succession, including Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, who worked on both the Vice President and Iannucci. The BBC is in the thick of things.

4. Bloodline

(Netflix)

Family strife between dysfunctional siblings and an estranged patriarch did not stem from the Legacy. Early Netflix hit Bloodline stars Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn and Linda Cardellini as the feuding children of hotel owners Robert and Sally Rayburn (Sam Shepard, Sissy Spacek).

(Not available for streaming — at least legally)

Hard to keep track of these days, this fantastically insane 2009 series retells the story of King David — as Goliath's biblical sidekick — closer to the modern day USA. Ian McShane is blamed for the act of Silas, who claims to be the rightful ruler of the «Gilboa» kingdom because a «crown» of butterflies once landed on his head. Christopher Egan is young David, Allison Miller is Silas' Shiv Roy-style daughter Michelle, and future Marvel hero Sebastian Stan is Jack, Silas' resentful son. The backstab and insane dialogue are memorably combined — what a pity the Kings were shut down after only one season.

6. Development delay

(Netflix/Disney+)

Before the Swarms, there were the Bluts, a wealthy family populated by terrible people and led by an abusive father. Arrested Development was funnier than Legacy and starred the consummate cast of Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnett, David Cross and Jessica Walter. But it said the same about the privileged, who were obnoxious and could get away with anything (although the Bluts' construction business wasn't anywhere near as brilliant as the Roys' media empire). Walters' subsequent complaint that Tambor bullied her on set tarnished Arrested Development somewhat, but did not tarnish its comedic genius. .jpg» />Henry Winkler and Jeffrey Tambor in Arrested Development Credit: 20th CENTURY FOX 7. Empire

(Disney+/Hulu)

Treacherous intrigue in a music industry dynasty is the theme of this comedy-drama set in New York City. Set in Empire Entertainment, a hip-hop conglomerate led by Jay-Z mogul Lucius Lyon (Terrence Howard) and his three sons, each vying for the inheritance of their throne (including Jussie Smollett, who was subsequently jailed for staging false hatred). self-crime). It's all very similar to Legacy, albeit with better tunes.

( Paramount+)

In many ways, Taylor Sheridan's epic tale of a squabbling dynasty of Montana ranchers is the opposite of The Heir. While Legacy wins all the Emmys, Yellowstone has to be content with being one of the most watched shows in the US (where it tops Legacy's ratings). Kevin Costner plays Logan Roy-style John Dutton III, while Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes and Wes Bentley play his greedy children. Like Legacy, Yellowstone has reached the end of the line: amid reports of tension between Sheridan and Costner, the final season will be its last. Unlike Legacies, it spawned numerous spin-offs, including 1883 (set during the Wild West) and 1923 (Depression-era vehicle for Helen Mirren).

(Sky/Now/Max)

What is it about rich families that don't get along that we find so irresistible? Whatever the answer, here's another one. The Gemstones are a clan of mega-church televangelists led by John Goodman's Dr. Eli Gemstone, and Danny McBride, Edie Patterson, and Adam Devine are less than pleasant children.

10. Industry

(iPlayer/Max)

Written by two former investment bankers, the HBO/BBC collaboration takes place in a fictional London investment bank where a crowd of young graduates spend all their time working hard, having sex, backstabbing everyone and making a lot of money. drugs — often at the same time.

Industry 11. Soul Mates

(Prime Video)

This Blackmirror-style anthology series about love in a dystopian future has nothing to do with Legacies. But it stars Shiv Roy herself, Sarah Snook as Nikki, a woman whose marriage falls apart after she takes a test to discover her true «soulmate».

(iPlayer/Prime Video)

The 2016 BBC adaptation of Tolstoy features standard ripped bodices and starched dialogue. But check out Logan Roy, aka Brian Cox, wearing a stupid hat as Russian Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov.

(All4/Netflix/Prime Video)

The series that started it all for Jesse Armstrong. The original comedy look starred David Mitchell and Robert Webb as troubled buddies in London, and Olivia Colman as Mitchell's character's girlfriend. The environment of the ugly 20-year-old plain is very different from Legacy, but the humor is just as brutal.
