New Fiat Topolino: Much cuter than sister Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-e

The Italian brand Fiat, part of the Stellantis Corporation, has published the first photo of the revived Topolino model – it will be the cheapest in the range.

We talked about Fiat’s plans to revive the “mouse” (as the name Topolino is translated from Italian into Russian) back in the spring of 2022, and now you can finally look at it. As expected, the new Topolino turned out to be a clone of Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-e, already well-known on the European market, but still stands a little apart from them, because the designers noticeably redrawn the original body, giving it the pretty “face” of the classic Fiat 500 and generally rounder contours – even the wheel arches were redone.

    Fiat 500 Topolino

The historical ancestor of the novelty was called the Fiat 500 Topolino and was produced between 1936 and 1955 at the legendary Lingotto plant in Turin, whose constructivist aesthetics we will see in the interiors of new Fiat models. Alas, it is not yet possible to look inside the new Topolino – today only one photo of the exterior has been published, the full-fledged premiere is yet to come.

The classic rear-wheel drive Fiat 500 Topolino, with its modest dimensions (overall length – less than 3.3 m, wheelbase – 2 m), had a frame structure and a very unusual layout: a 569-cc 4-cylinder gasoline engine was located in front of the front axle, and a water-cooled radiator it was installed behind it with an upward offset – this solution made it possible to make the hood sloping and achieve good aerodynamic characteristics of the body. The classic Topolino had several body styles: a two-door sedan, a convertible, a van and a station wagon with an extended stern. 500 TopolinoThe new Topolino can be called a convertible or even a beach car, ideologically it is closest to the Citroen Ami in the Buggy version: restrictive ropes are installed instead of doors, a soft roof can be rolled up, the striped coloring of the front panel evokes thoughts of the sea and the sun.

The technical stuffing has not yet been declassified either, but it will probably be the same as that of the French and German brothers: the electric motor mounted on the front axle produces only 6 kW (8 hp), a full charge of a battery with a capacity of 5.5 kWh enough for a maximum of 75 km, the maximum speed is limited at around 45 km/h. If the classic Fiat 500 Topolino was a small but full-fledged car, the new “mouse” is an electric quadricycle, which, due to its modest technical characteristics, does not require modern expensive passive and active safety systems. This means that the new Topolino will be the cheapest model in the Fiat lineup, expected to be priced at no more than 10,000 euros in the base trim. For comparison, let's say that Opel Rocks-e in Germany costs from 7990 euros, Citroen Ami in France – from 7790 euros, but Topolino will be slightly more expensive due to more refined design.

    Opel Rocks-e

Citroen Ami and Opel Rocks-e are produced in Morocco at the Stellantis plant in the city of Kenitra, the new Topolino will also be registered there, for its sake the capacity of the plant was doubled to 40,000 vehicles a year.
