Fans may not appreciate Zach Crowley, but there's a reason England does

Zach Crowley, along with Ben Duckett, forged a relatively successful initial partnership – at least by recent England standards.

It used to be said of Kevin Pietersen that he was a great pitcher, a two-faced compliment that suggested he only really played in big streaks when the attention was on him.

Zach Crowley is one level down. He's a great player who tries his best to turn them into great opportunities, but in this era of English cricket, that's enough to keep him on the team.

It's unlikely that Crowley would have been up to first ball in this Ashes series under any previous England management.

No player has been more loyal or trusted by Brandon McCallum and Ben Stokes than he is. Johnny Barstow is currently under scrutiny for his performances, but this is just the start of this series. Before that, he was baseball's flag bearer.

Crowley spent his entire career in England, starting with 267 against Pakistan, fighting for his place, but he stayed on McCallum's team because he does exactly what the coach wants .

He is one of only three players to appear in every Test since the early McCallum era (Joe Root and Stokes are others), and a sign of his relative success in the series is that his spot has not been the subject of speculation, thanks in part to the Bairstow debate. .

Crowley is averaging 32.66 after three tests against Australia, but that's acceptable for a player who has a career mark of 28 and has played his part in every match so far. His innings at Headingley – 33 and 44 – were worth more than the numbers suggest because he counterattacked when Australia didn't expect it.

At Edgbaston, he kicked off the series by cracking that opener for four and hitting 61. He made 48 in Lord's first inning before he was stalled by advancing on Nathan Lyon. The dismissal, which infuriates some, just upsets Crowley because he didn't fire the shot properly. The sacking also doesn't bother the coach, who constantly encouraged his batsmen to seize the moment.

McCallum invested time and energy in Crowley, picking him up at difficult times, pointedly looking for him in the locker room after a low score, sometimes with a cigar in hand. There was pressure in front of Ash to leave him out. Outlandish theories suggested starting with Stokes instead. The England captain was even asked ahead of the Irish Test if he had considered such a course of action. This provoked a sharp one-word response with a 'as if' snort: 'No'.

One overlooked aspect of the McCallum era was improved partnerships with the first wicket. The two combinations – Crowley and Alex Lees, and now Crowley and Ben Duckett – averaged 40.73 for the first partnership with a tone-setting 5.13 runs per over. From Alastair Cooke's retirement until McCallum's appointment, England averaged 25.51 points against an average of 2.4 points per over with 11 different partner combinations.

To match McCullum and Stokes' vision of how to approach Test cricket, they need two openers who can play freely and not be afraid of the consequences. Amidst the carnage of the 2021–22 Ashes tour, Crowley played one pitch that provided insight into how he could adapt to a new environment. He was 77 in Sydney when he took on Pat Cummins and Mitchell Stark to become the only English batsman to actually return to Australia. McCallum watched footage of this pitch before choosing his first lineup. “It turned out pretty quickly that he had something that other players didn't,” McCallum said. “So my message was: “There are 10,000 players who can play differently. Only a few can play like you. So go ahead and be the best version of yourself. “And I will try to encourage him to do so.” > 77th Crawley in Sydney showed how comfortable he feels against fast bowling. Photo: AP/Rick Rycroft

Crowley considers this his favorite inning for England to date, even more than his 267 innings against Pakistan, because he came out and made a difference. “He showed the character, he showed the fight, he showed the intention,” said Ricky Ponting at the time.

Crowley averages 30 points against Australia and 11 against New Zealand. He likes the speed of the ball, so he plays better against Australia, while New Zealand's attack is 5 mph slower, a bit more like the bowlers he faces in county cricket, where Crowley fights a moving ball. As expected, Tim Murtha sacked him twice in the championship game at Lord's this season, causing the game to roll its eyes.

He was lucky to play in this era. England has the courage of her convictions now. Alex Hales and Jason Roy were chosen to do similar work, but were dropped when they weren't immediately successful. It helped Crowley's case that England were winning last summer. Success has become a protective shield and England intend to choose him as long as he “affects cricket games”, which is how managing director Rob Key defended his choice earlier this summer. He plays selflessly, you can't go out and attack like a rookie without wanting to fail, and he's been an 'influencer' on this series so far.

Crowley was always going to play this Ash. His position was never in doubt among the English elite. He has four chances to achieve the same result as the 10,000 other players McCallum mentions. If he does, it will be the most complete justification of the coach's philosophy to date. If he doesn't, he expects the debate to start again over who should open the pitch.
