HiPhi Y enters the market: a crossover with unusual doors has become the most affordable in the range

One of the “non-format” premieres at the Festival of Speed that ended yesterday in Goodwood (UK) was the Chinese mid-size electric crossover HiPhi Y. Its can already be ordered in China, sales in Europe will begin later this year.

HiPhi is a trademark of Human Horizons, which was founded in 2017 by entrepreneur Ding Lei (aka David Dean), who has extensive experience in leadership positions in the Chinese auto industry. Human Horizons makes premium electric vehicles with a rather eccentric design that makes it stand out from other Chinese startups. The first production model of Human Horizons was the HiPhi X large three-row crossover, it entered the Chinese market in 2021, followed by the HiPhi Z large sedan in 2022, and now the mid-size HiPhi Y crossover has joined the gamut.

Europe was named one of the priority regions for Human Horizons, so it is not surprising that the latest model was brought to the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and, I must say, the unusual Chinese crossover did not get lost in the crowd of spectacular European sports cars, the public willingly considered the HiPhi Y. In parallel HiPhi Y was launched in China last weekend, in Europe it will be possible to place an order for this crossover only at the end of the year, and deliveries will begin in 2024.

HiPhi Y is built on the same platform as the previous two models of the brand, it has a fully controlled chassis and adaptive air suspension (front – double wishbones, rear – multi-link). Overall length HiPhi Y – 4938 mm, width – 1958 mm, height – 1658 mm, wheelbase – 2950 mm. The standard 21-inch wheels are equipped with aerodynamic shields, the declared drag coefficient of the body is 0.24.

The main feature of the HiPhi Y body is frameless doors without handles (they are replaced by small keys for unlocking the lock and activating the electric drive), and the rear doors are composite: part of the roof rises synchronously with the main “gate” along with the side glazing section. The doors are equipped with perimeter sensors that limit the kinematics in cramped conditions, such as in an underground garage or next to other cars. In addition, artificial vision organs are integrated into the body, necessary for the operation of electronic driver and autopilot assistants: 1 lidar, 5 radars, 13 video cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

The equipment includes an onboard food thermobox with a volume of 6.4 liters (it can maintain temperatures in the range from -6 to +50 degrees Celsius) and a 2820-watt Meridian audio system with 25 speakers.

The basic version of HiPhi Y is equipped with a single electric motor on the rear axle (247 kW, 336 hp, 410 Nm) and a battery with a capacity of 76.6 kWh, a full charge of which is enough for 560 km of the CLTC cycle. To 100 km/h, the single-engine crossover accelerates in 6.9 seconds, the maximum speed for all versions is limited to 190 km/h.

The single-engine HiPhi Y is also available with a longer-range 115 kW battery h, cruising range on a single charge – 810 km on the CLTC cycle.
