Dramatic weather patterns continue to impact large swaths of Europe as Greece struggles to contain a wildfire west of Athens that scorched forest areas for the fifth day on Friday as another wave broke out in the country heat.
Firefighters, supported by aerial bombers and reinforcements from Cyprus, France, Israel and Italy, tried to put out the flames, which burned houses and evacuated local residents.
“We continue to put out the fire west of Athens. We are concerned about the re-ignition,” said a fire department spokesman.

More than 100 properties have been severely damaged by a wildfire and another near the Greek capital that was extinguished earlier this week.
Climate Crisis Minister Vassilis Kikilias urged people to remain vigilant. The risk of wildfires will remain high in the coming days, and further heat waves are predicted after the previous heat wave.
“We are having a very difficult three-day period, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with extreme weather conditions and very high temperatures accompanied by strong winds,” the minister said, adding that after a short respite, a new heat wave is expected from the middle of next week. Polis will be closed from 12:00 to 17:30 local time until July 23.
The Mediterranean, as well as North America, Asia and North Africa, are expected to continue to experience heat waves next month, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned on Friday.
«We should expect, or at least plan for, these extreme heatwaves to continue through August,» John Nair told Reuters Mr., WMO Senior Adviser on Extreme Heat.
