Geely is sending the Radar RD6 electric pickup truck for export. Waiting in Russia?

Launched last year by Geely, the Radar brand is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts. Radar's first model was the RD6 mid-size electric pickup truck, currently only available in China, but the first export batch has already been assembled.

PR people present Radar as Geely's answer to the COVID-19 pandemic – they say that people have sat up in quarantine and now they want to spend as much time as possible in nature. In the future line of Radar, “adventure” SUVs, crossovers and even motorcycles are promised, but the RD6 electric pickup truck became the first-born.

The Radar RD6 entered the home market last fall and now, according to Geely, its share in the electric pickup segment of the Chinese market exceeds 50%. But this segment in China is still very small and there is practically no competition in it: Radar RD6 sales are only a little over a thousand units per month. You can’t do big business with such modest volumes, so it’s not surprising that Geely’s management decided to send Radar to explore new markets: the first export batch was assembled at a factory in Zibo (Shandong Province), but Geely does not yet say for which country or countries this the batch is intended.

According to a number of indirect signs, the Chinese media believe that Thailand will become the first export market for Radar, where pickup trucks are very popular, but in general, an electric truck is also expected in Europe, because it has no analogues here. It cannot be ruled out that Geely will decide to launch Radar in Russia, but our market still needs other models, and not RD6 in its current form.

The fact is that the RD6 currently does not have all-wheel drive, it is equipped with a single electric motor on the rear axle with a maximum output of 200 kW (272 hp) and 384 Nm. The pickup truck is based on the SEA modular platform, well known from other electric vehicles of the Geely holding, or rather its cargo version, called MAP. The body is load-bearing, and the suspension is typically light, spring: front – MacPherson type, rear – multi-link. In general, you can’t go far in the wild on such a pickup truck. But it is quite fast: acceleration to 100 km/h takes less than 7 seconds, the maximum speed is 185 km/h.

Radar RD6 – 5260 mm, width – 1900 mm, height – 1830 mm, wheelbase – 3120 mm. The capacity of the body to the top edge is 1200 liters, there is an additional trunk for 70 liters in front, and a storage niche with a volume of 48 liters is equipped under the pillows of the second-row sofa. The battery capacity is 63, 86 or 100 kWh, the range on one charge according to the Chinese CLTC cycle is 400, 550 and 632 km, respectively.

In China, Radar RD6 costs from 145,800 yuan (1.84 million rubles in translation at the current exchange rate). In the future, the Radar RD6 will have twin-engine all-wheel drive modifications, with such it would already be possible to enter the Russian market.
