Despite the fact that the rotary engine version made much more sense than its «brother»; battery-powered, the United States is not prepared for this type of vehicle.
Almost a year ago, the 2022 Mazda MX-30 was also pulled from sale after it failed to meet its sales target of only at 560 units.
The 2022 model was introduced in the fall of 2021, as is customary in the USA (model year ahead of introduction year). The rotary engine version was not available at that time. The 2023 version was unveiled in early January, with the first units arriving last spring in April.
Although prices were reasonable ($34 $110 for the base model, or $37 $120 for Premium Plus), they are overpriced when compared to other electric vehicles such as the Tesla Model 3 RWD or the Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV. Also, a very good battery doesn't help. According to the EPA approval cycle, the 35.5 kWh lithium-ion batteries barely last about 100 miles, and don't even have fast-charging capability.
