Barack Obama privately warned Joe Biden not to underestimate Donald Trump in the 2024 US presidential election.
Mr. Biden, who was Vice -president when Mr. Obama was in office, met with his former boss at the White House. in June.
He told Biden that Trump, despite his legal troubles, could be a more formidable opponent in next year's election than many Democrats realize.
Mr. Obama cited the loyalty of Mr. Trump's supporters, the polarized nature of the country, and the influence of former president's deputies in the media.
This comes after a new CNN poll showed that the proportion of Republicans who consider Biden's victory in 2020 illegitimate is growing.
The poll showed that 69% of Republicans and Republican supporters agree with Mr. Trump in that Mr. Biden is not a legitimately elected president, up from 63% earlier this year.
The White House dinner took place on June 27, when Mr. Obama pledged to do everything possible to help Biden to be re-elected, the Washington Post reported.

A Biden spokesman said, «President Biden is grateful for [Mr. Obama's] unwavering support and looks forward to once again campaigning side by side with President Obama to win in 2024 and finish the job for the American people.»
Obama chose Hillary Clinton as his vice president for the 2016 Democratic nomination and did not immediately endorse Biden in 2020. However, aides have repeatedly dismissed suggestions of tensions between the couple.
As Mr. Trump appeared in court in Washington to refute criminal charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, Mr. Biden said that won't watch.
While cycling outside his Rehoboth Beach, Delaware vacation home, the President was asked if he would oversee Trump's indictment, and he replied, «No.»
Most senior Republicans backed Trump, echoing his position that the charges were politically motivated and the result of Democrats «arming» the justice system. Some, however, including Mike Pence, a former Trump adviser the vice presidential nominee and the vice president he pressured to use his ceremonial role to block confirmation of Mr. Biden's victory are out of action. />
Mr. Pence, who could have been a star witness at the trial, said he «hoped it wouldn't come to that,» but Mr. Trump has placed himself above the Constitution.
He said, «The president specifically asked me, and his pack of crazy lawyers asked me to literally reject the votes, in effect, to cancel the election … chaos would ensue.»
Mr. Trump's defense is expected to rely on the argument that he did believe the election was rigged.
However, Bill Barr, his former attorney general, said: «At first I wasn't sure, but I came to the conclusion that he knew full well that he had lost the election.»
Mr Barr said his former boss's actions were «nauseous» and «despicable», adding: «Someone who participated in this kind of bullying process that is fundamental to our system and for our self-awareness. government should not be near the Oval Office.
“We see only the tip of the iceberg in this matter. I think there's a lot more to come and I think they have a lot more evidence of what President Trump is thinking.»
