A woman has been accused of trying to kill her US Air Force husband by poisoning his coffee after he caught her in the act with hidden cameras.
39-year-old Melody Johnson from Arizona was arrested in July after her husband, Robie Johnson, showed allegedly incriminating footage to police.
Mr. Johnson became suspicious when he noticed the strange taste of his coffee while in Germany in late March.
He continued to drink it for several weeks before using the water chemistry test strips in his coffee machine. which appeared to show high levels of chlorine.
Mr Johnson then set up a camera in his home that captured footage of his wife «pouring something into his coffee pot,» according to the complaint.
>He pretended to drink coffee until they returned to the US in the summer because he didn't want to file a police report in Germany.
The pilot installed another camera while staying at a hotel at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona, in July. Again, the footage is said to show Mrs. Johnson “walking over to his coffee maker and pouring something into his water tank.”
Police are asking for more evidence
Mr. Johnson reported his wife in police the next day, but he was told by the officers that it was not clear what she poured into the car.
It wasn't until the family moved into the house in July and Mr. Johnson installed some cameras that he was able to record his wife allegedly pouring bleach into a container before pouring it into the coffee maker.
He recounted. Police said he believed the 39-year-old man tried to kill him to collect death benefits.
The couple is going through a divorce but was living with a child at the time.
< p>Mrs. Johnson was arrested by police in Tucson and charged with attempted murder in the first degree, attempted aggravated assault, and adding poison to food or drink. She is being held at Pima County Jail until her next scheduled court appearance on September 6.
Bail has been set at $250,000 (£197,000), which prosecutors believe was necessary because Mrs Johnson had recently bought a house. in the Philippines and should be considered an escape risk.
Investigators found a container of liquid in her bedroom that smelled of bleach, court documents say. The liquid inside the coffee maker also smelled like bleach.
