Diane Abbott was criticized after A deleted tweet says migrants who drowned in Italy 'really screwed up'.

The post was in response to a comment by Lee Anderson, vice chairman of the Conservative Party, who said earlier this week that asylum seekers complaining about being transferred to a barge for accommodation should «go back to France.»

Brendan Clark-Smith, former Tory secretary, tweeted: «And to think Sir Keir Starmer was campaigning to have this man become our Home Secretary.»

41 of the 45 migrants are believed to have died after a boat capsized off the coast of Tunisia in a stormy sea. The metal boat set sail from Sfax, Tunisia, on August 3, but the ship was capsized by a huge wave after several hours of travel.

The survivors were flown to the island of Lampedusa on Wednesday after a rescue operation.

Ms Abbott's tweet was not the first criticism she had made of the Tory vice chairman for his comments. Ms Abbott, who once served as shadow home secretary, previously described Mr Anderson's comments as «a new low even for Tories.»

But ministers rallied around Ashfield MP Mr Anderson and Attorney General Alex Chalk. suggesting that his «outrage» was «well founded» after only 15 migrants initially boarded the Bibby Stockholm barge for accommodation.

The transfer of migrants to the ship was mired in difficulties and delays due to security concerns , local opposition and lawsuits.

Ms Abbott suspended Labor's whip in April for suggesting in a letter to the Observer newspaper that Jews, Irishmen and travelers were not subjected to racism «all their lives» .
