The new «seven» BMW has got armored versions, one of them is electric

The new BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection have a base level of protection VR9 according to the VPAM standard, they will be assembled manually on headquarter of the BMW Group in Dingolfing, Germany.

The flagship sedan BMW 7 Series generation G70 debuted last spring and is gradually acquiring a variety of modifications. Armored versions stand apart because of their technical complexity and high cost, because for them, in fact, a separate body with an armored capsule and a reinforced chassis are being developed, while only power plants and interior are borrowed from “civilian” sedans, and even those are modified taking into account a specific purpose armored vehicles.

Electric armored car company BMW offered the first among its main competitors. It is curious that not the top version of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive (660 hp, 1100 Nm) was taken as the basis, but the “intermediate” i7 xDrive60 with a maximum output of 544 hp. and 745 Nm. The choice was probably made in favor of the optimal balance between dynamics and power reserve on a single charge. It is not known how many hundreds of kilograms the armor adds to the already heavy electric sedan (the curb weight of the BMW i7 xDrive60 is 2715 kg), but the acceleration dynamics “dipped” noticeably: the acceleration time to 100 km/h increased from 4.7 to 9.0 s, and the top speed is limited to 160 km/h.

The petrol BMW 7 Series Protection with a 4.4-liter V8 biturbo engine (530 hp, 750 Nm) is noticeably more dynamic: the first « a hundred «he gains in 6.6 seconds and accelerates to a maximum of 210 km/h.

Both armored versions have a fairly high base level of protection VR9 according to the VPAM standard, that is, they are able to protect riders from most types of small arms, hand grenades and drone attacks, and the glasses correspond to the maximum level of protection VR10 and can withstand a shot from a sniper rifle. The petrol BMW 7 Series Protection can be fully upgraded to VR10 on request.

The heavy doors of armored sedans are equipped with a servo drive. The fuel tank of the BMW 7 Series Protection is made of a “self-healing” material, that is, in the event of a breakdown, fuel leakage will be quickly eliminated. Specially designed 20-inch wheels are shod with puncture-resistant Michelin PAX tires. BMW is especially proud that the armored Sevens have a fully steerable chassis, which gives them extra maneuverability in difficult situations.

On part of the comfort options armored sedans are not much inferior to «civilian» ones: you can install a refrigerator, a 1265-watt audio system Bowers & Wilkins with 28 speakers, luxury chairs with built-in massagers and much more. Specific options include a full set of flashing lights, flag poles and other executive gear.

Prices for the BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection have not been disclosed, but orders are already being accepted and the first finished vehicles will be shipped to customers in December of this year.
