Leonard Bernstein's children defended Bradley Cooper after how the actor was accused in «Jewish Face» for wearing a prosthetic nose to play the late composer.
The Hollywood actor, who is not Jewish, was embroiled in an anti-Semitic scandal after his release. trailer featuring him playing Bernstein in the upcoming Netflix biopic Maestro.
Critics accused him of failing to use his acting skills to «get the power of the story of this man and his Jewishness.»
But the composer's three children supported Cooper's image of their father and defended his use of «makeup, to heighten his likeness.»
In a statement Wednesday, Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein said: «Bradley Cooper accompanied the three of us through every step of his amazing journey as he made a film about our father.
< p>“We were touched to the core to see the depth of his dedication, his loving attitude towards our father’s music and the pure sincere joy he brought to his research.
“It breaks our hearts when we see any misrepresenting or misunderstanding his efforts.

“It is true that Leonard Bernstein had a beautiful big nose. Bradley chose to use makeup to accentuate his likeness, and we're fine with that. We are also sure that our dad would be pleased with it too.
“Any harsh complaints about this seem to us, first of all, insincere attempts to humiliate a successful person — a practice that we who too often performed on our own father.
“During the making of this film, we felt the deep respect and, yes, the love that Bradley brought to his portrait of Leonard Bernstein and his wife, our mother Felicia.
«We are so lucky to have had this experience with Bradley and can't wait for the world to see his creation.»
Netflix released on Tuesday the trailer for a new movie that will show the relationship between Bernstein and his wife , Costa Rican actress Felicia Montealegre Bernstein, played by Carey Mulligan.
In the trailer, Cooper looks older as he portrays the composer at various points in his life. .

Former EastEnders actress Tracey-Anne Oberman, who is Jewish, compared Cooper's appearance with a «prosthetic nose» to what looks like wearing blackface makeup.
She told her Instagram followers: «Cillian [Murphy] could have played Oppenheimer because he looks like Oppenheimer and could get the power of that man's history and Jewishness through the power of his acting, same Tom Conti since Einstein didn't have to» put on the nose.
“If Bradley Cooper can’t do it by force or acting alone, then don’t take him — find a Jewish actor.”

Bignomin Gilbert , spokesman for the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism, said: «We live in a world that is more sensitive to the racial portrayal of characters on screen and to which actors play them.
«Reasonable people may disagree on the extent of what is a positive moment for the current industry. But it's the reality.
«So it's surprising no one would think twice about sticking a big nose at a non-Jewish actor playing a Jew.
«Filmmakers here need to be shown that they understand why is this a problem. If this is not done, this will indicate the presence of double standards regarding the depiction of Jews on the screen.
