Downing Street has been accused of «weak» efforts to celebrate the Lionesses' run to the Women's World Cup final, saying its decorations outside number 10 were a pale imitation of a similar performance by the men's team.

The Liberal Democrats suggested it would have been «a very different history» if a men's team played in a World Cup final — the first time since 1966 that England had done so.
Dame Caroline Dinenage, chair of the community committee on culture, media and sport, said: “Of course there is a stark contrast between the decorations of Downing Street then and now. I hope number 10 will improve his game before Sunday.”

“This is further evidence of their feeble attempt to support England's most successful football team in a generation. You can't help but suspect that if the England men's team had played in the final it would probably have been a different story.
“The country is ready to rally behind the Lionesses. Once again, the prime minister is out of sight.»
