Mauricio Pochettino warned newcomers to Chelsea that their extraordinarily long contracts are no guarantee of playing time, and said he would not accept any player who chose to remain motionless now that their long-term future is secured.
After Boeli. -Clearlake taking over the club, Chelsea regularly handed out unusually long contracts to new signers. Romeo Lavia, whose £58m arrival from Southampton was confirmed on Friday, has signed a seven-year deal.
Lavia's signing follows the completion of Chelsea's £115m signing of Moises Caicedo, who signed an eight-year contract with an option for a further year extension. People like Mikhail Mudrik, Enzo Fernandez and Nicholas Jackson also have contracts with the club until 2031.
“It's not that we sign a player and spend money, but they are sure that they will play Pochettino said. “There is no such thing in football. The talented players that the club spends money on must show every day that they deserve to play.
“My job is to be honest with everyone. [If we] sign a player to an eight-year contract, and if he does not participate, without obligation, he will not play. This is my job. This is our [coaching staff's] opinion. That's why I say that as long as I have the support of the owner, the support of the sports director.
“And they should trust our opinion. That we're going to do our best. If you have an eight-year contract, the player must be responsible and show the respect, commitment and quality that we expect from him. .jpg» />Romeo Lavia has signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea. When asked if these long-term contracts make it harder to get rid of players if they don't live up to expectations, or if they really aren't happy anymore. at the club, Pochettino said that these players are responsible for making the move work.
“Look, players can't get upset,” he said. “We will be upset with the player. Because if we sign a player and give him an eight-year contract, and the player doesn't want to do what we expect him to do and don't play, it's because of him. Not because of us.»
Meanwhile, Chelsea will work on a new fitness plan for Rhys James in an attempt to fix his repeated injury problems after the club's captain was sidelined for the next few weeks, at least at least with a hamstring problem. James has had health issues in recent years and only made 16 Premier League appearances last season.
«It's a sad moment,» Pochettino said. “He is our captain. He was so happy to be our captain. Now we will try to find all the information and try to develop a strategy that will give him the best [recovery]. It is best for him to get strong, recover well, and try to avoid and anticipate these problems before they happen. It's a lot of work.»

Chelsea continue to look for a new goalkeeper after Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Real Madrid on loan. New signing Robert Sanchez, who arrived this summer from Brighton for £25m, played against Liverpool on the opening day of the season.
When asked if another goalkeeper would be signed, Pochettino replied: «It's good . question because we think about it. We think and study all situations and opportunities in the market. The club evaluates all options.
