Crossover Trumpchi ES9, brother of the Russian GAC GS8, debuted in the “off-road” version

The three-row cross, which the manufacturer considers a separate model, is presented as a rechargeable hybrid.

< p> At the auto show that opened today in Chengdu, China, the GAC concern held the premiere of the Trumpchi ES9 serial SUV (the Trumpchi brand is used only in China). The three-row SUV is positioned as a new flagship model, although in fact we have before us a renamed second-generation GS8 (the last cross, by the way, has just officially reached Russia).

The GAC Trumpchi ES9 debuted in an off-road version called the Traveler, but it is expected to be a simpler option — its photo was previously leaked by the Chinese Ministry of Industry. It is curious that initially the “hardcore” performance was prepared specifically for the GS8: back in April, it was preceded by a concept, and a month later, certification pictures of the product “eight” with an off-road design appeared. At the same time, the GS8 Traveler was certified with a gasoline engine, while the ES9 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Note that the crossover with a lower index also has a hybrid version, but without the possibility of recharging from the mains (HEV; such an SUV is not sold in Russia). By the way, GAC did the same with the latest generation M8 minivan: the monocab has recently turned into a new Trumpchi E9 hybrid. But back to ES9 Traveler.

The “off-road” cross has more massive bumpers, an original grille with a large GAC inscription instead of an emblem, LED running lights lined up in columns, new wheel arch linings and an additional box on the tailgate (because of it, the rear license plate had to be moved to the bumper). As for the “simple” ES9 PHEV, without the Traveler prefix, then, judging by the photo of the Ministry of Industry, it outwardly differs from the Trumpchi GS8 HEV only in nameplates: the feature of hybrids is its own grille, which was “dropped” to the bottom edge of the bumper.

The interior as a whole is the same as that of the original «eight», a virtual tidy and a large-screen multimedia system are installed inside. At the same time, the GAC Trumpchi ES9 Traveler is only available in a six-seat version so far, while the GS8 is still available in a seven-seat version. The Chinese write that in terms of technology, ES9 repeated the mentioned minivan E9. Both models are equipped with a 2.0 petrol turbo engine (190 hp), an electric motor with a capacity of 182 hp. and a battery with a capacity of 25.6 kWh. The total return is 373 hp. The system can operate in parallel and serial modes. According to preliminary data, the cross-country will travel about 110 km only on electric traction.

The GAC Trumpchi ES9 Traveler should enter the home market before the end of this year. Prices have not yet been announced, and the company has not yet announced plans to supply such a crossover to other countries.
