Classless Brooks Koepka deserved his Ryder Cup humiliation — at least Scottie Scheffler cried

It wasn't just a beating, it was a shame. On a crisp fall morning here in Marco Simone, Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, world No. 1 and five-time major champion, managed to lose 9 and 7 to a player playing in just his second Ryder Cup and just turning pro. four months ago. Scheffler, crying in the arms of his wife Meredith, at least seemed sufficiently humbled by the score. Koepka, completely ugly, didn’t even bother to take off his hat for a handshake.

It's hard to imagine a more pathetic performance from golfers of this level. On paper, this was the most formidable American duo that captain Zach Johnson could field. Yet they were marmalized by the largest 18-hole lead in the tournament's history by two Scandinavian prodigies, Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg. We remind you that Aberg, 23, who just graduated from college in Texas, has yet to take the exam in his specialty.

Their own teammates could barely understand it. «9 and 7?» Justin Thomas said to his caddy Jim “Bones” McKay, his mouth open. Perhaps the most outrageous aspect was that Hovland and Aberg didn't have to play as hard as they could to hit that historic shot. They started with a par-par-bogey sequence and still left the third green tee above while Scheffler and Koepka conveyed the look of detached hackers.

When the end came on the 11th, the surrender became so miserable that it was impossible to turn away. Before Scheffler could aimlessly swipe his chip across the grass, Koepka, barely bothering to take a practice swing, carried the ball 20 feet past and gave up the ball. He likes to show off his alpha male swagger, Koepka. Just the night before, he had petulantly accused Jon Rahm of acting like a «child» for daring to celebrate two eagles on his final three holes. But no one bought John Wayne's act, least of all Hovland and Aberg, who duly gave him the worst beating of the Ryder Cup.

Koepka is capable of extreme obnoxiousness when he is in a good mood. In February, at a hockey game in Florida, he was seen insulting a player using a traffic cone as a prop. And after Rahm's recent burst of brilliance meant he was limited to half in Friday's four-balls, he was extremely rude in criticizing the Spaniard when his final eagle putt hit the back of the cup and bounced into it. “I want to get on the board. and pout just like Jon Rahm did,” Koepka said. “But it is what it is. Act like a child. But we are adults, let’s move on.”

In truth, Koepka is not on solid ground by accusing anyone of immaturity. For months into 2021, he maintained a tiresome boyish feud with Bryson DeChambeau while continuing to monetize the farce with tasteless jokes and laughs in Las Vegas. But against Ryder Cup opponents of this caliber, his posturing was punished. It underscores the old maxim that it's one thing to talk nonsense and another to back it up.

Scheffler broke down in tears and was consoled by his wife after his foursome suffered the worst defeat in Ryder Cup history.

Amid scenes of disbelief, Marco Simone, Hovland and Aberg inflicted disgusting humiliation on Scheffler and Koepka, scoring 9 and 7 points.

With the disgusting Americans already collapsing in Rome, Hovland and Aberg have achieved their biggest lead ever. send the shell-shocked Scheffler back to the clubhouse by 10.20 a.m.

LIV rebel Koepka, who ratcheted up tensions with an attack on Rahm on Friday, was clearly seething and kept his cap on throughout the handshake.

But Scheffler was distraught: the footage shows him crying and hiding his face in his hands, while his wife Meredith hugs him.

Authorities confirmed the score was a humiliation for two of Team USA's most prominent players, breaking all records in history Ryder Cup.

Before Saturday morning, the largest margins of victory were 8 and 7, twice achieved in singles matches (Couples vs. Woosnam, 1987; Kite vs. Clark, 1989).

p>7 and 6 in fours were achieved. was released three times, but all of them were American teams. Europe's biggest win in any format was 7&5. Such statistics highlight the magnitude of the odds-defying triumph, with Aberg ranked 80th in the world and Scheffler still considered the world's best. Scheffler's emotions came afterwards when it dawned on him that he had lost the worst result in Ryder Cup history.

The 2004 loss to Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods at the Oakland Hills reverberated for years to come. But it was even more humiliating: Hovland and Aberg were solid, while Koepka and Scheffler were rotten.

The American pair had a five-over-par lead on the first three holes when they fell apart. Hovland and Aberg were one hole over par on the first three holes, but won them all before Aberg nearly birdied one hole on the fourth.

Another birdie at the sixth put the top five European pairs through, and as Both American players fought poorly and it was only a matter of time before they were put out of their misery.

This increased the home team's lead to six points, and it looked as if it would stay that way. That's not all, as Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood were three up and six played against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the front four.

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton were ahead by the same margin in the last match. against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, while Brian Harman and Max Homa put the only American Reds on the board, one hole ahead of Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka after 10.

Team Europe captain Luke Donald warned his team to be wary that American players would react like a «wounded animal» as they tried to overcome a record five-point deficit, but the only wounds that were shown were entirely self-inflicted.
