The Var operator, who can be heard on the PGMOL audio broadcast trying to prevent the catastrophic mistake that disallowed Luis Diaz's goal on Saturday, is a Dutch graduate who usually doesn't even speak during conversations between by the referees on the field and those in Var's room.
This is 30-year-old Mo Abbey, head of advanced systems at Hawk-Eye Innovations, a technology partner of the judging organization PGMOL. He can be heard asking a confused War Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook if they were «happy» with the result.
Normally a replay operator, Abby's role as described during a match is not spoken out in discussions between officials – however, in this case he acknowledges the seriousness of the situation and says that it is “Oli’s” advice that the game is delayed. The «Oli» in question is Oli Kohut, Abby's boss and executive director of PGMOL's Var Center.
Unfortunately for England and Cook, they ignore Abby's advice. They were probably surprised to hear him speak live, although none of Var's officials seemed able to react quickly enough.
Abby says on his LinkedIn page that he «specialized» in field of computer systems development. , graduated from the University of Westminster in 2016. He worked for Hawk-Eye for five years.
PGMOL said in a statement: “PGMOL can confirm that we have conducted a review into the circumstances that led to Luis Diaz's goal being wrongly disallowed for offside in a Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
“We accept that standards did not meet expectations and admitted the mistake to Liverpool immediately after completion
“Detailed report including key findings and the immediate actions taken, as well as the audio between the on-field officials and the VAR team, was presented to the Premier League, which shared it with Liverpool FC and subsequently to all other Premier League clubs.
