It is rightly described as a British classic and the clash between the pair of two-time world featherweight champions Lee Wood and Josh Warrington is set to produce a pulsating battle in front of 10,000 fans in Sheffield.
Wood, who hails from the same area of Gedling in Nottinghamshire, home of British boxing legend Carl Froch, and Leeds fighter Warrington have both built strong fan bases in their respective cities.
The rivals are meeting on neutral ground and the atmosphere is likely to be tense. They captured the imagination of boxing fans across the country, and both developed relationships with two nearby major football clubs, making their support even more fervent.
Warrington is president of the Leeds United Supporters' Club and on an exciting night at Elland Road, one of the highlights of his career, he beat Lee Selby as former Leeds player Lucas Radebe held his belt. Likewise, Wood was paraded on the Nottingham Forest pitch with his championship belt, and the departure of the football and boxing fans ensured that the two fighters — outside the heavyweights — had some of the biggest live support for boxing in the country.
Sheffield's Utility Arena is split 50-50 between rival fans and promoter Eddie Hearn believes it will be «very lively».
The promoter added: “Two great Brits, I think that’s the best way to describe them. I've seen both guys at the top and both guys at the bottom and they always give us incredible entertainment, and on Saturday night they put it all on the line again.”
Both are winners, not given to chatter or mind games. These formidable opponents prefer to make their statements in the ring, much like the gentleman fighters of a bygone era. This has helped them build a truly loyal and appreciative fan base.
Wood starts as favorite, although Warrington cannot be counted out. Ben Davison trains Wood and orchestrated his return to World Championship glory in May in a rematch with the very dangerous Mexican Mauricio Lara, who stopped the Nottingham man in seven rounds in February — and it was a brilliant performance in a 12-round match to reclaim the World Championship crown. boxing association. Davison believes Wood and Warrington's respect for each other is so deep that they will bring the best out of both leads.
Wood has more power, Warrington has a famous engine. The fight could get heated at a frantic pace, further electrifying fans on both sides.
“I don’t think my strength is going to be the key to winning, but I have it if I need it,” Wood said. “Josh had some really good wins, probably better than me. He is here because of these powers and not for any other reason. The atmosphere will be electric and I expect it to be the best I've ever seen, especially on my walk around the ring: we sold more tickets than ever so it's going to be a great night and one that will go down in history. I want to be remembered as one of the best featherweights in this country and one of the best fighters in my city. A knockout is possible, I'm not going into the fight expecting to knock him out, but I'm going to dominate.”
Warrington, meanwhile, is relishing the chance to become a three-time knockout. World champion and wants to please his loyal fans. “I’m not offended that I’m not the favorite, at least it’s motivation,” he said. “It's true that Wood may have more power and Warrington has more miles on his belt, but I can see him being very close in six rounds but Wood winning late by stoppage or on points. But it has remained one of the best British matches for some time. Fighting for fans who will push both main characters.
