The Geely Emgrand sedan that just arrived in Russia has changed its make and engine

The four-door began to be produced in Malaysia under the local Proton brand. This model differs from the Chinese source in design and filling.

For several years now, the Malaysian automaker Proton has been under the control of the “heavenly” holding company Geely Auto, so it is not surprising that the brand’s line has been replenished with models made from the “Chinese”. The first-born was the Proton X70 crossover, also known as the former Geely Boyue (we have a restyled SUV presented under the name Atlas Pro). Then the compact SUV Proton X50 and the three-row crossover Proton X90 entered the market, that is, the pre-reform Geely Binyue/Coolray and the modernized Geely HaoYue/Okavango, respectively. Well, now Proton has diluted the range of “borrowed” models with a sedan: production of the new product has just started in Malaysia, local dealers are already accepting orders.

The four-door was called Proton S70; under this index lies the redesigned Geely Emgrand of the current generation. By the way, the original sedan only recently found a price list in Russia. Externally, the Proton model differs from the Emgrand in the design of the front end: the S70 has its own radiator grille with a dot pattern instead of vertical stripes. Of course, the emblem and nameplates were also replaced.

Inside the Proton S70 there is a different steering wheel; in addition, the sedan received a two-story central tunnel, whereas the Geely Emgrand has a solid one. Otherwise, the cars repeat each other inside, except, of course, for the location of the steering wheel (in Malaysia, driving is on the left). The list of Proton S70 equipment (depending on the configuration) includes a multimedia system with a “floating” tablet, virtual tidy, wireless charging for a smartphone, six airbags, cruise control and all-round cameras.

If the Geely Emgrand in all markets, including Russia, has a 1.5 naturally aspirated four-cylinder gasoline engine, then the Malaysian sedan is equipped with a turbo engine of the same volume. There are no other official details about the Proton S70 engine yet, but local specialized media believe that the model received a turbocharged engine from the Proton X50 cross. On an SUV, this engine produces 150 or 170 hp. And the four-door Proton also received a seven-speed robotic gearbox with two clutches, while the Emgrand had a CVT or a six-speed classic automatic transmission (6 automatic transmission is currently only in the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan).

In Malaysia, sales of the Proton S70 sedan will start in the near future. The model will probably be exported later: Protons are supplied, for example, to South Africa.
