The debut model of the automobile division of the Chinese company Xiaomi has surfaced in the electronic database of the Ministry of Industry of the People's Republic of China; its entry into the market is expected next year.
Founded in 2010, Xiaomi is one of the largest Chinese manufacturers of smartphones and other consumer electronics. Xiaomi products are well known and widely distributed in Russia. At the beginning of 2021, rumors appeared in the business media that Xiaomi wanted to diversify its business and engage in the production of electric vehicles. Insiders then reported that Great Wall would be Xiaomi’s key partner in this matter, but yesterday it turned out that the Beijing plant would be involved in the contract assembly of Xiaomi electric vehicles automaker BAIC.
In March 2021, the founder and CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, officially announced the creation of an automobile division and the intention to invest $10 billion in it, while at the level of investments and software, Xiaomi also cooperates with other automakers — for example, with Polestones Automobile.
Under its own brand, Xiaomi will produce high-tech premium electric cars, the first-born will be a large sedan with a simple index SU7 — recently, for some reason, all Chinese new products of this type are assigned the number 7 in the name, as if there is some kind of directive issued by the CCP on this score, the latest examples are Zeekr 007, eπ 007 and Luxeed S7, with which Xiaomi SU7, in fact, will compete.
Overall length of Xiaomi SU7 is 4997 mm, width is 1963 mm, height is 1440-1455 mm, wheelbase is 3000 mm. Standard wheels are 19 or 20 inches. The design of the debut Xiaomi model is completely unremarkable, but neat, its author is Li Tianyuan, who previously worked at BMW and oversaw the development of the iX electric crossover. The trunk lid of Xiaomi SU7 is equipped with a retractable spoiler. Top versions will have lidar above the windshield, clearly indicating the presence of autopilot level 2 or higher.
There is still little information about the Xiaomi SU7 platform: it is known that it will have a 400- or 800-volt architecture, depending on the model version. The basic version will have a single electric motor on the rear axle producing 220 kW (299 hp), and its top speed will be limited to 210 km/h. In the all-wheel drive version, the power of the front electric motor will be 220 kW (299 hp), the rear one will be 275 kW (374 hp), and the maximum speed will be 265 km/h. The batteries will be supplied by BYD and CATL, the maximum capacity is 101 kWh, the maximum range on one charge is about 800 km. The curb weight of the sedan is 1980-2205 kg, depending on the modification.
No official photos of the interior yet no, but there are spy shots published by the Chinese magazine Autohome, in which we see a large multimedia tablet in the center of the front panel, a narrow instrument panel and a three-spoke steering wheel with a sporty style. Xiaomi, of course, will have all its own electronics, the operating system will be adapted to the automotive needs of Xiaomi HyperOS.
The premiere of Xiaomi SU7 will take place in the coming months or even weeks, entering the market is expected in the first quarter of the next year.
We add that one of Xiaomi’s main competitors in the smartphone market, Huawei, has already become an active player in the Chinese car market, it has a fully controlled AITO brand, the Luxeed brand recently launched with Chery, and a dozen more small collaborations, including Avatr.
