Emmanuel Macron's wife and former teacher thought he would «fall in love with someone his own age» after he was transferred from the school where she taught him.
In Interview Brigitte Macron said she put off marriage to her former student for ten years because she feared the lives of her three children would be ruined if she officially announced her relationship with a teenager their age.
The French president was 15 when he fell in love with his married drama teacher Brigitte Ozier, then 40, at Providence Catholic School in Amiens in the early 1990s. Her daughter Laurence was a classmate of the future French president.
When their whirlwind romance caused a scandal in a provincial town in northern France, Macron's parents, both doctors, sent him to boarding school in Paris, where he studied in the sixth grade.
“My head was a mess,” Ms. Macron, now 70, told Paris Match in a rare interview about her life as France’s first lady since 2017.
“So small for me the boy was crippled. Emmanuel had to leave for Paris. I told myself that he would fall in love with someone his own age. This didn’t happen.”
“I didn’t want to miss life”
Ms Macron stopped teaching drama in the class where she met her future husband, but continued to teach French and Latin. “The only obstacle was my children,” she said. “I took the time to not ruin their lives. It took ten years, time to put them on the rails. You can imagine what they heard. But I didn’t want to miss out on my life.
“I don’t know how my parents, who were models of fidelity and good upbringing, would have reacted to our marriage.”

Ms Macron's mother, Simone Trogne, died in 1996. Her father, Jean, a successful chocolatier, had died two years earlier.
Ms Macron said her older siblings joked about the gossip. She divorced her ex-husband André-Louis Ozier, a banker, in 2006 and married Macron a year later, when he was a young civil servant.
Her son is now 48 — three years older than her second husband — and her daughters are 46 and 39 years old. Mr. Ozier died in 2019 without giving an interview.
In an interview with Paris Match, Ms. Macron raved about her husband.
“There’s not a single day that he doesn’t surprise me,” she said. “I have never seen such a memory… such intellectual abilities. I had many brilliant students, but none of them had his abilities. I have always admired him.”

She praised the king and queen, whom the French presidential couple hosted during their state visit in September. “When the royal couple arrived, I was worried,” she said. “But from the moment they arrived at the Arc de Triomphe, when Camille got out of the car and kissed me, they set the tone. He is very sophisticated, very educated and very funny. They are characterized by delicacy.»
In private, the king and queen were reserved but charming, she added.
«On Thursday evening they came for an aperitif at the Champs Elysees restaurant because they don't eat much. «, she said.
«There were only four of us. Wonderful moment. Here they are — Charles and Camilla. The next day they left for Bordeaux.» Commenting on speeches by other world leaders, she said Melania Trump, who came here in 2017 with her husband, was «very nice.»
